Secure Connection Failed or Blank/White Page - Random Sites and Intimitent

Recommended Posts

SOLVED

The root cause appears to a possible DNS leak with Ubuntu NetworkManager and AirVPN, but I'm still not sure.  I've now switched over to using Eddie which has resulted in all websites working once again.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Original Issue:

I've been encountering 2 problems when trying to open sites, either:

  • The web page is white/blank
  • The browser displays an error stating "Secure Connection Failed"

and sometimes but rarely:

  • The browser displays an error stating "File not found"

Some details:

  • Firefox 55.0.2
  • DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu
  • DISTRIB_RELEASE=16.04
  • DISTRIB_CODENAME=xenial
  • DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS"

I tried removing an re-installing the browser but it makes no difference and when I attempt to connect to the sites using a non-VPN connection they work.

The sites vary, generally the more mainstream they are the more reliable but I was unable to connect to Reddit this morning.

My current VPN goes through Netherlands so my plan is to try Germany next.

Any ideas?

EDIT: Seems fix now.  Please ignore.

EDIT: Nope it's back.

Hi, have you ever find solution.

I have the same issue no matter what browser I use. The webpages are not loading or displays 'Secure Connection Failed' when connected to VPN on OpenVPN client. I already tried several server with a mix of UDP or TCP ports. Please let me know what information I need to provide to receive any help with that issue.

Thanks.

I can't connect to anything and get this over and over in my log:

Wed Oct 11 14:37:55 2017 write UDP: Network is unreachable (WSAENETUNREACH) (code=10051)

I'm still working on this issue, attempting to diagnose if it's due to the VPN or the root cause is the OS and Browser.

Can you post Eddie/OpenVPN logs ?

I'm looking through my /var/log/syslog file at the moment.  Is that what you wanted?

I've also tried turning on FireFox logging using about:networking but it's pretty dense and nothing has jumped out at me as the cause.

It might be the same issue it may not be.  I've found this to be very intermittent and unpredictable.  E.g. I'll be able to open Reddit but after 1 minute - 5 minutes something will change and I'll hit a "Secure Connection Failed" page.

Things I've tried:

  • Other browsers (Vivaldi gives "Access was denied.  You don't have authorisation to view this page.  HTTP ERROR 403")
  • Clearing the cookies and cache (Increase the likelyhood of an initial success but pages start to fail after 1 minute - 30 minutes)
  • Altering setting using about:config (Many posts have suggested SSL config changes but none have resolved the issue)
  • VPNs, both TCP and UDP, through other proxy countries* (Same issues)

EDIT:

* I've tried through other countries but I've always had to configure the VPN manually.  Whenever I use an ovpn file for an auto configuration it imports ok and display an OS message saying the connection worked but when I open a browser it just hangs in a constant state of refreshing.
