Hyperoptic 1GB Connection Speed Question.

Recommended Posts

Guest

Hi Guys.

I currently have a 1000meg hyperoptic connection running into my apartment.

When I test without AIRVPN running I get around 820meg down and 940meg up. However, the fastest I can receive when using AIRVPN is around 150meg down and 207meg up.

Now I understand the VPN will slow down the speed and I expect this, however, it seems to be reducing it by over 50% is this normal?

Other than that, the VPN client is great and I have no other problems or issues, I'm just a little frustrated I can't take advantage of a bit more speed.

Thanks

Cipher Performance per CPU core AES-256-GCM is the relevant column for Air OpenVPN.

Note for current Intel the big difference between i7-6700 and i5-6500 for new high end personal systems. Intel know how to entice a bigger budget.

Note the multiples of improvement over the last 5 years, which does reduce the performance for recycling old laptops etc as "smart network servers" in place of "dumb routers".

Note the poor performance of ARM chips in many mobile phones, so limits for wifi connected tablets etc with OpenVPN. Only a single core can work on an encrypted VPN link with current crypto methods.

I have not done it (yet) because I only have a slow 4G rural link 12Gbps and my i5 6200U only uses a few percent for OpenVPN, but the article shows how to download and test your own system for comparison if running Linux (and perhaps the "bash on W10" subsystem ?). I run Linux Mint in a VirtualBox on W10, so could do the test. I think.
