Possibel to route some programs to not use VPN?

Recommended Posts

Intermediate user, advanced question, multiple systems: W10, *nix, droid.

I like to make everything as automagical as I can. I've got the airvpn client installed on my windows machines no problem. I've also got my Ubuntu machines configured with no problem and the open vpn client working with airvpn on my droid phone with no problem.

The only issue I have is there are some websites and apps that I want to use like netflix that block the airvpn ip addresses. And yes, I am perfectly capable of manually connecting and disconnecting from the vpn; except I'm getting old and senile and some times I forget to reconnect.

So, I'm looking to see if there is an automagical way to route just some select programs out of the VPN?

And yes, I know the default config encrypts your whole network connection and that is the whole point. But, I'm hoping that somebody way more advanced than me can tell if it's possible to do something like set up a tap adapter (or something similar) and then route just certain programs/apps through that tap and have everything else run through the VPN. (And for ease of use I would be willing to designate browser X for access to sites A,B and C.)

If it can even be done at all I expect it to be a whole lot easier (?) in linux (maybe the wrong word, more accessible/) than in windows or android. (BTW my phone is not rooted.)

So, am I just whistling Dixie and being lazy and senile or is there a way to do this b/c the googles have not been my friend today.
