Eddie 2.12.4 released

Recommended Posts

Hello!

We're very glad to inform you that a new Eddie Air client version has been released:2.12.4.

Eddie 2.12 includes important bug fixes and many changes meeting users' requests and preferences.

Furthermore, some parts have been rewritten to make handling of additional commodities more efficient. For example, curl is now used for any HTTP and HTTPS request, and stunnel "verify" parameter has been again set to 0, to increase likelihood to "bypass" restrictive proxy/firewalls in "OpenVPN over SSL" mode, referring the whole security layer to OpenVPN.

2.12 version is compatible with several Linux distributions. For very important notes about environments, please read here: https://airvpn.org/forum/35-client-software-platforms-environments

Please read the changelog: https://airvpn.org/services/changelog.php?software=client&format=html

Upgrade is strongly recommended.

Just like previous versions, Eddie implements direct Tor support for OpenVPN over Tor connections. Eddie makes OpenVPN over Tor easily available to Linux and OS X users: no needs for Virtual Machines, middle boxes or other special configurations. Windows users will find a more friendly approach as well. This mode is not handled anymore as a generic connection to a socks proxy, but it is specifically designed for Tor and therefore solves multiple issues, especially in Linux and OS X, including the "infinite routing loop" problem (see for example http://tor.stackexchange.com/questions/1232/me-tor-vpn-how/1235#1235 )

As far as we know, Eddie is the first and currently the only OpenVPN wrapper/frontend that natively allows OpenVPN over Tor connections for multiple Operating Systems. https://airvpn.org/tor

We recommend that you upgrade Eddie as soon as possible.

Eddie 2.12 for GNU Linux can be downloaded here: https://airvpn.org/linux
Eddie 2.12 for Windows can be downloaded here: https://airvpn.org/windows
Eddie 2.12 for OS X Mavericks, Yosemite, El Capitan and macOS Sierra can be downloaded here: https://airvpn.org/macosx

PLEASE NOTE: Eddie 2.12 package includes an OpenVPN version re-compiled by us from OpenVPN 2.4 source code with OpenSSL 1.0.2k for security reasons and to fix this bug: https://community.openvpn.net/openvpn/ticket/328

Eddie overview is available here: https://airvpn.org/software
Eddie includes a Network Lock feature: https://airvpn.org/faq/software_lock
Eddie 2.12.x is free and open source software released under GPLv3. GitHub repository https://github.com/AirVPN/airvpn-client

Kind regards & datalove

Air is the best. I used to get slow speeds but I upgraded my Eddie to the latest version and changed my port from udp 443 to udp 53 and I'm getting my full 50mbps speed on all servers.

You guys are the top vpn by far, keep up the great work!

On macos sierra 10.12.3 udp 443 primary, ssl 443 altenative ok. On Little Snitch Network monitor curl checkip.dyndns.org/com are working + Eddie via curl as well.

Non of the ssh is working. Continue to restart 3, 2, 1, restart 3, 2, 1.

On Little Snitch Network monitor curl checkip.dyndns.org/com are blocked + Eddie via curl is working.

(With Eddie 2.11.15 no prob. whatsoever!)

Reinstalled twice, 1 x dmg and 1x pkg.

A suggestion for Future Release. Please save the Password at the xml file crypt and not plain.

Then you would need a Master Password to decrypt the normal password, so what is the purpose? Just do not tick "Remember" and the password will not be written at all in the xml file fulfilling your request in an equivalent (or even better) way.

A different approach would be encrypting the whole AirVPN.xml file, This could make some sense actually, probably we will discuss in the future about this option.

Kind regards

Hello,

thx for the Replay. Many file sharing User have also the AirVPN Client inside the File Share. I don't want explain the Details how easy it is to get the AirVPN.xml File from some one else. Encrypting this File will be a nice solution. Thank you.

@snapz , @trekkie.forever

Issue about SSH connection with Eddie 2.12.4 and macOS confirmed.
Officially, the fix will be in 2.13.
But as an exception, to avoid releasing a new version only for this custom and little fix, we have patched the current 2.12.4 version. Please simply re-download.
Nothing has been changed in Windows or Linux builds.

Kind regards

Eddie 2.11.15 stable still fails DNS checks on Manjaro. This happens with both rename and resolvconf methods of changing the DNS. I will attempt to connect and it will fail the DNS check, disconnect, attempt to reconnect, fail the DNS check, disconnect, attempt to reconnect, etc . . . If I uncheck the "Check AirVPN DNS" box in the settings, and attempt to connect without performing a DNS check, it will connect. If I check ipleak.net the DNS server is (correctly) the same address as my IP address. If I check my resolv.conf file, the address is (correctly) "nameserver 10.4.0.1". The fact that everything looks correct makes me wonder why it always fails the DNS check, and why this problem has existed for so long. As an extra note, Eddie 2.10.3 still succeeds at the DNS check when I run it on my system.

The same thing happens to me on arch running Eddie 2.12.4.

Could it be related to the failed host lookup in ResolveWithoutAnswer here https://github.com/AirVPN/airvpn-client/commit/7a3839a4a9a2d7b7264e7fa6b82674cff9abcbae#diff-668f7f9d37330aef1b21c60be1abf56eR310?

I'm seeing the following error after having enabled debug logging in Eddie:

. 2017.03.26 18:25:24 - Shell of 'sh','-c 'host -W 5 -t A gflxfdcfucfmbaatprdbfjhhtzlqohyc.airvpn.check_dns'' done sync in 37 ms, Output: host: convert UTF-8 textname to IDN encoding: prohibited character found

I'm also still seeing this problem on an up to date, stable, Manjaro system, with Eddie 2.12.4. This is the error I get:

. 2017.03.27 16:31:53 - /etc/resolv.conf moved to /etc/resolv.conf.eddie as backup
. 2017.03.27 16:31:53 - DNS of the system updated to VPN DNS (Rename method: /etc/resolv.conf generated)
. 2017.03.27 16:31:53 - Shell of 'sh','-c 'chmod 644 /etc/resolv.conf'' done sync in 24 ms, Output:
I 2017.03.27 16:31:53 - Checking route
I 2017.03.27 16:31:55 - Checking DNS
. 2017.03.27 16:31:56 - Shell of 'sh','-c 'host -W 5 -t A ghcisgacvimmtaldbqobgjmuijowuype.airvpn.check_dns'' done sync in 62 ms, Output: host: convert UTF-8 textname to IDN encoding: prohibited character found
E 2017.03.27 16:31:56 - Checking DNS don't match
...
E 2017.03.27 16:32:02 - DNS checking failed.

By the way, I also seem to get a DNS leak issue [DNS leaks do not exist in Linux, Staff], in 2.12.4 (as well as before with 2.11.15). This is with Network Lock enabled. I can see that Eddie has rewritten resolv.conf to "nameserver 10.4.0.1," but when I check with ipleak.net and dnsleaktest.com I can see that I'm connecting to both the Airvpn DNS server and the OpenDNS (which is what I have my DNS set to in resolv.conf, when not using a VPN). I don't know if it's related, but is in any case is an obvious problem.

I'm getting an "Error opening file for writing" when trying to install. I've clicked abort for now. Screenshot attached. Using Windows 10

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Run the setup executable as an administrator?

Thanks for the reply.

Same error unfortunately.

I've downloaded the Zip version instead and that works. Not sure if there any negatives to that?

Could have been Eddie still being open in the background for some reason, glad that it worked with the zip version tho.

Yep. Had the same issue updating from 2.11.15. For some reason there was still a process running even after exiting Eddie via the menu in the upper left. After killing the process via task manager the install was successful.
