Windows 10 - Security comparison?

Hello,

 

How secure do you think Windows 10 is compared with:

 

Windows 7

Linux

Mac OS

Android

iOS

 

While I think the security is better than before,  I don't think it's safe from Microsoft....

 

What do I mean by security?  The ability to get around authorization and authentication.  Or if you have feel there is another area of weakness - please share.

 

Now I know I am going to hear about Linux being much safer, I assume it is because it's modular and security at each level, whereas MS is one giant block of code.  Is that correct?

Also, Linux is very similar to Unix (is it a derivation) which enjoys almost 40+ years of being developed - so I understand it has a time advantage.

 

I am not a developer so please feel free to dumb it down.

No operating system should be considered wholly secure. There are exploits for every known operating system and likely many more that the IT community is unaware of, almost certainly some of which are produced by governments and security agencies.

 

It's kind of like that quote from Animal Farm that was coincidentally  written by George Orwell "All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others"

 

All operating systems are insecure, however some are more insecure than others.

 

If you want the maximum level of security, i would not recommend using any mainstream OS such as major linux distributions, all versions of Windows and Mac OSX and all other Apple OS variants.

 

There are operating systems such as TAILS and Qubes which are designed by security professionals with their own attributes. As i understand it TAILS specializes in not storing any information whatsoever and routing all traffic through Tor, while Qubes specializes in isolating code from other code and preventing system exploits. 

 

Don't take my word for it though, i have never used one of these before, but i am certain there are people in the community that have much more knowledge of OS security than i do, just putting in my two cents.

A higher level of security is how privacy you can be on a platform. You may have to consider if its easy to enhance Privacy (firewall etc)

What you're asking is difficult to answer.

• You can compare Windows 10 to Windows 7 like apples, both receiving security updates whenever a vulnerability pops up.
• You compare an apple with a pineapple when you compare Windows and Linux: Slightly different defaults, slightly different approaches to problems.
• Then you add Android and iOS, like you would add a strawberry and a plum. Completely different approaches and designed to run on other kinds of hardware.

What they have in common is that all of them are operating systems (or fruits). Sure, you might prefer one OS over another like you'd say a strawberry tastes sweeter than a pineapple, but is it also healthier? How secure your system is depends on what you do to secure it. Around these forums one sentence gets cited often: Security is a process. I can compare even that to fruits: How healthy your pineapple is depends on how you treat it.

With the right tools and decisions every system can be made relatively secure. Even proprietary OS like Windows or macOS. But no system will ever be bulletproof, just like an apple will not make you immune to diseases.

 

And yes, Windows 10 sure has hidden bugs inside its fruit counterparts. Some people eat it. Then they might have eaten a healthy meal but who knows what one of these bugs is going to do in the body - or with it.
