AirVPN's Eddie Executable versus other VPN Providers

Recommended Posts

Holy cow.  Look at the difference between the results that Eddie gets in this tool, and for example what PIA's executable gets.  I'll probably add more of these.  But...ouch PIA, what they hell.  They rely on Ruby to set up their stuff...and that's not even the worst part:

1.  PIA - https://www.hybrid-analysis.com/sample/44bccf9ce4e6187a9082af23f415e99007e540a33ac97b4373b1aa4ff4291842?environmentId=100

2.  AirVPN - https://www.hybrid-analysis.com/sample/f2ee062ddff29be9557100959b752df53d9a7c56e43cc014115d397b0cd720b5?environmentId=100

In closed source software, everything can happen. Eddie has the advantage of being transparent. If you take some time to go through the code you might even find out what those suspicious indicators are all about. You also might learn how to read code...

On a not-so irrelevant note: Man, am I glad I switched to Linux... those installers always creeped me out. The moment you opened them you had at least one new registry entry and a couple of files in all manner of system and user directories. If you proceeded, well, your funeral, as they say.

In the Eddie About you get the url to the source code at: https://github.com/AirVPN/airvpn-client

I have seen people paranoid about using Eddie and just want OpenVPN client, but in the spirit of Open Source you can inspect the code and build Eddie yourself. If professionally engaged to set up secure networking for a commercial client you might well do that.

Looking at the code, it is Microsoft's "open sourced" (hmm) C# .cs, and uses the Visual Studio build system. I do not know C# but it is a modern cousin to Java and efficient and rather less bug prone and security faulty than the C++ used in Firefox. I think it still uses Mono for portability to Linux. MS Visual Studio used to cost rather big money and I have never used it, but the tools and developer skill set here are rather widely available.
