Not sure about the crash but you can try the following to resolve the checking route issue:

 

Uncheck "Check if the tunnel effectively works" in (Preferences>Advanced>General)

 

I also had to use TCP (Preferences>Protocols) and uncheck "Check if tunnel uses AirVPN DNS" (Preferences>Advanced>DNS) to get it working for me...

I had the same problem but it´s solved opening many ports I had closed in the router. Also you can try disabling the firewall or using the firewall as only accepting the requested connections.
