DNS servers for Android? Air's or Google's?

Recommended Posts

I just had the opportunity to upgrade my phone to Kitkat 4.4.2 and did not realize how it would break OpenVPN ( see  http://www.androidpolice.com/2014/03/31/bug-watch-vpn-issues-in-kitkat-are-interfering-with-connection-routing-fixes-are-planned-for-some-of-them/ ).

I think I found a few workarounds including having 'Open VPN for Android' ignore all over DNS's and to forcefully only use Google's.  (searchDomain = blinkt.de | DNS Server = 8.8.8.8 | Backup DNS Server = 8.8.4.4)

Are these DNS settings optimal for privacy?  I know Air also has DNS servers but I do not know what the are offhand.  Does it make much of a difference?

Not having 'Override DNS Settings by Server' checked will result in a DNS leak if I reconnect to Wifi/Mobile.

I'd use 10.4.0.1 as primary (VPN server's DNS) and either 85.214.20.141 (digitalcourage, aka FoeBud) or 213.73.91.35 (Chaos Computer Club) as secondary DNS in association with this setting. Google Public DNS is tracking the requests.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I'm hoping my phone ISP allows users to downgrade somehow back to 4.2.  There's a lot of people on Japanese sites complaining about the upgrade.

Why don't you downgrade yourself? Use CM10.1 or another Custom ROM based on Android 4.2.x. If you use Samsung and wish to keep it official go to SamMobile, look out for a 4.2.x firmware for your phone in your country and flash it via Odin.

Oh, I am thinking about it for sure.

By the way, with a Custom ROM you have the option to upgrade to 4.4.4. In version 4.4.3 something in regards to VPN has been fixed.. not sure if they mean the VPNservice API.

Be aware that any Custom ROM based on KitKat is still in development, you will get your daily dose of bugs. Android 4.3.x based ROMs are the most stable right now.
