(Asuswrt-Merlin) VPN occasionally turns on by itself

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I use either OpenVPN or the AirVPN program to connect to your servers from this computer, but when I want to use the VPN on my other devices in my house I use the OpenVPN client in my Asus RT-N66U (using Asuswrt-Merlin) settings. It works fine, the only problem is sometimes I will come home and find that I'm still connected to the VPN, even though I definitely disconnected the last time I used it. Neither OpenVPN nor the AirVPN program is running, but when I go into my router's settings the client is switched to on. This has happened a few times in the past year, and I can't say it has ever happened when I am using my main computer. Every time it has happened I have come home and noticed that websites are switching to the country of the VPN server I am using in my router's client, or am getting ads from that county. That lets me know that my router is connected still. After turning it off, it has never switched back on by itself when I am using a computer or device in the house. Another person living in this house that uses the same wifi as me has a Macbook and an iPad, but that person does not need a VPN service and has never turned it on. Thus, I can only assume from this that the router is turning it on automatically, though I don't know why.

What could be causing this? For now I will backup my settings and delete it from the router's settings, and will just copy and paste them back whenever I connect using my router, but I don't want to have to do that every time.

Thank you!

Your best approach would be to setup your router to use OpenVPN then backup the settings. Then completely remove your OpenVPN settings, don't just disable them. Once deleted, do a hard restart on the router then backup the router to a different file. Now, to switch between VPN and No VPN simply load the appropriate backup file. If you still have issues then you may want to do a 30-30-30 on the router and start over.
