Hello,

I just signed up for AirVPN and now I get a mail saying I need to upload my photo and id . What is the point of getting a vpn then if they can have information about me?

the credit/debit card used in the transaction and unauthorized use of
your personal details.

In order to validate your payment and complete your order, please
provide us with the following documents during the next two business

presented for your order.
 - a copy of a photo ID (identification card, driver`s license or
passport) of the Credit/Debit Card account holder'

we do not understand your point, that's a verification for suspect transactions to make sure that the credit cards data and the data you provide will match in order to prevent common frauds on the online environment. Without such verifications for each even slightly suspect transaction there would be no option for merchants to accept credit cards online: the number of frauds would be overwhelming.

 

If you want to hide your identity in the transaction phase to the payment processor you need to pay with Bitcoin, not with your credit card. If you want to abort the transaction just do not provide the require data.

I do online shopping but I never have been asked for my photo and id before. This is just ridiculous. I will wait till I can check my transaction code and sent it to them and sign up for Airvpn in a day.

I'm having the same issue when trying to pay with a Visa 3V voucher (which can be purchased for cash, without showing ID).

 

An alternative that they give is to send them the Authorization Code instead of the documents.

 

The email I received states:

** Important notice **
As an alternative option to sending the documents requested above, you
can provide us with the authorization code for the transaction that was
placed using the Avangate system, in a reply to the current
notification.
The authorization code is a 6 or 7 digit unique number that is generated
for any transaction with a credit/debit card and can be obtained by You
contacting the issuer bank at the number located on the back of the card
or by accessing the online banking application(if such an option is
available for your bank) for the card used in the order.

By providing the authorization code you will help us to quickly and
efficiently validate your order and insure that it will be authorized
without any further delay.

The code is easy enough to get (it was visible for me right after the transation when I logged into the Visa 3V site). The only downside (assuming it goes through) is that it takes a person to review the code, so it might take a business day or so for them to approve.

 

Ideally, this kind of transaction would not be flagged for review in the first place, but I can imagine why it might.

 

 

I don't think bitcoin is really ready for prime time yet - not for the average user. By default, it isn't anonymous (public ledger) and you have to jump through hoops for it to be used anonymously:

 

You have to buy anonymously, which often means finding someone local, meeting them, and paying with cash.

Or buy non-anonymously and try to make it anonymous afterwards by using a mixing service (which, if I understand correctly, makes it difficult to trace but not impossible).

 

Hopefully, new projects on the horizon, like Dark Wallet and Zerocoin, will make bitcoin both easier to use and completely anonymous.

even not considering mining, a good alternative is using a dedicated wallet and running the client always behind TOR, then selling goods or services in BTC, just like you do with any "government" currency to get that currency via cash in exchange of your goods or services. It's not that Bitcoin in itself saves you the effort to work in exchange of money...
