Unable to Connect using AirVPN with Tor

Recommended Posts

Trying to use AirVPN with Tor Browser Bundle as outlined at https://airvpn.org/tor/

connecting always fails with error "socks_handshake server asked for username/login auth but we were not provided any credentials"

when using the configuration generator I select configuration mode: Direct, protocol TCP, port 443. In the proxy block username/login was not asked for, greyed out. Can you help please? I opened an account at AirVPN specifically for purpose of using Tor to connect to your servers. Why is Tor asking for credentials?

I signed up for AirVPN 2 days ago and spent a portion of yesterday trying to resolve this same issue.

This post helped me to get AivVPN over Tor working using the OpenVPN GUI and SOCKS.  I believe this resolved the issued with socks_handshake and credentials:

<Path to Tor>\Tor Browser\Data\Tor\torrc-defaults file:

#SocksPort 9150
SocksPort 127.0.0.1:9150 PreferSOCKSNoAuth

I'm still unable to get the AirVPN client to work in this configuration via SOCKS but I suppose I don't need it since the OpenVPN GUI seems fine:

AirVPN log file:

3/31/2014 - 4:53 PM TCP connection established with [AF_INET]127.0.0.1:9150
3/31/2014 - 4:53 PM recv_socks_reply: Socks proxy returned bad reply
3/31/2014 - 4:53 PM SIGTERM[soft,init_instance] received, process exiting
3/31/2014 - 4:53 PM Failed to start.

Thanks for the quick response! Editing the \Tor\torrc-defaults file as you noted solved the problem.
