  1. Debian 11, nftables v1.0.6, Bluetit 1.3.0. Hello all, I'm trying to add an nftables input rule. In my very limited understanding the standard way to do this would be add it into /etc/nftables.conf. Would that still work if using bluetit persistent network-lock feature? Based on a cursory look through bluetit's code it seems that bluetit flushes the nftable rules and then replaces them with a full working kill-switch configuration. That would prevent my input rule from taking effect, correct? If so, how do I go about adding my nftables rule in conjunction with bluetit's killswitch? My first thought was a small daemon to nft insert rule filter input ip saddr <badip> drop After bluetit has loaded on boot, but it occurs to me that should bluetit ever disable/enable network-lock then the rule would get overwritten. Thanks!
  2. Hi, I need a better walkthrough for setting up Airvpn in Debian. I’m relatively new to Linux, although I did manage to easily set up Airvpn in Ubuntu. However, I’m just not getting anywhere with Debian, and I can’t seem to find a solution. Any help welcome, Cheers
  3. EDIT: Figured it out. I was under the assumption that systemd-resolved took over all DNS processing and made /etc/resolv.conf obsolete, but apparently that's still where AirVPN pushes the DNS settings too and somehow systemd-resolved overwrites it. Disabling systemd-resolved seems to have fixed this problem for now. Running AirVPNsuite on my server (Operating System: Debian GNU/Linux 11 (bullseye); Kernel: Linux 5.10.0-20-amd64), DNS breaks randomly 5-60mins after establishing connection. DNS settings, as far as I can tell, aren't being changed. I can still ping the server-pushed DNS server as well, but it just doesn't resolve. Relevant logs below: Logs immediately after establishing connection: root@labserver:~# resolvectl Global Protocols: +LLMNR +mDNS -DNSOverTLS DNSSEC=no/unsupported resolv.conf mode: foreign Current DNS Server: 10.32.178.1 DNS Servers: 10.32.178.1 Link 2 (enp0s25) Current Scopes: DNS LLMNR/IPv4 LLMNR/IPv6 Protocols: -DefaultRoute +LLMNR -mDNS -DNSOverTLS DNSSEC=no/unsupported DNS Servers: 10.32.178.1 Link 3 (docker0) Current Scopes: none Protocols: -DefaultRoute +LLMNR -mDNS -DNSOverTLS DNSSEC=no/unsupported DNS Servers: 10.32.178.1 Link 4 (tun0) Current Scopes: DNS LLMNR/IPv4 LLMNR/IPv6 Protocols: +DefaultRoute +LLMNR -mDNS -DNSOverTLS DNSSEC=no/unsupported DNS Servers: 10.32.178.1 root@labserver:~# goldcrest --bluetit-status 2023-03-02 22:47:43 Reading run control directives from file /root/.config/goldcrest.rc Goldcrest 1.2.1 - 9 December 2022 2023-03-02 22:47:43 Bluetit - AirVPN OpenVPN 3 Service 1.2.1 - 9 December 2022 2023-03-02 22:47:43 OpenVPN core 3.8.2 AirVPN linux x86_64 64-bit 2023-03-02 22:47:43 Copyright (C) 2012-2020 OpenVPN Inc. 4. I am unable to install eddie on Debian 11 Buster (stable), so any help will be greatly appreciated. Toward the end of the steps, after I run: sudo apt-get install eddie-ui I get this: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree... Done Reading state information... This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. 5. Hi all, I'm running Debian Buster and have a Windows 10 guest set up in qemu via virt-manager. I have Eddie and Hummingbird installed on the host, and have this same issue with both - namely that when Network Lock is enabled and I'm connected to Air on the host, the Windows 10 guest has no network connection. When Eddie/Hummingbird are not running, guest works fine. When I use Eddie to connect without Network Lock, the Windows 10 guest connects fine and has the Air exit IP address, as expected. So, something about the way Network Lock works is preventing the Windows guest from being able to use the Debian host's network. I'm using the default NAT network that virt-manager sets up. I'm also using AppArmor - I know qemu has its profiles set and enforced, don't know if this is relevant. Any help much appreciated! Thanks.

  8. Hi, I'm using Eddie 2.13.6 on Debian. In the fall, I received a DMCA notice when I accidentally launched my torrent client while AirVPN was not running. To avoid this mistake in the future, I set the qBittorrent configuration setting "Network Interface" to tun0. The other day, I was having trouble accessing a website and thought they might be throttling/blocking the AirVPN server I was using, so I temporarily disconnected AirVPN and disabled the network lock. It seems that qBittorrent leaked over my wlan0 interface during this time, since I received another DMCA notice. Any suggestions on how I might safely configure my torrent client to cease all communication when the VPN is not enabled? Or maybe a way to temporarily configure only a single application (my Internet browser) to communicate outside of the Network Lock? Thanks.
  9. Usage of operating systems is like living in countries: There are laws, things you may or may not do. Also, there are people, talking one or two certain languages, behaving in a certain way. Operating systems are like that: There are restrictions on the system what you can do and what is more difficult. And there is software, supporting certain languages, behaving in a certain way. You can of course decide to use two or more OSes, but it's like renting a holiday cottage and visiting it a few times a year. There's always home, as there's always a primary OS. I chose this simile because it reflects a bit of myself. I lived a certain amount of my lifetime in Russia, and now I live in Germany. Two different legal systems, two different kinds of people. As it is with switching my primary OS: I've been using Windows for a certain amount of time and now I switched to Linux. Why? Windows more and more gives me the feeling that it's nothing but a machine for procrastination and entertainment (besides being a cash cow for Microsoft). Like Facebook, where scrolling through your feed gives neither knowledge nor wisdom, it's only good at burning time. Also, Microsoft's recent publications marked them the enemy for me: What reputable, customer-centered company would publically say "Our goal is to have 1 billion Windows (10) installations by 2018"? It just shows me that Windows is no longer the OS "you want to fall in love with". Also, when Windows 10 was announced along with the Windows-as-a-Service plan, I really started to question my habits. I would not want to pay for an OS which spys on people and restricts both your creativity and productivity. My intention with this post is to show how easy or difficult it is to switch to Linux and what steps it involved for me so you get an idea how much work is needed. The thread can then be used for discussions. The first decision one needs to make, besides deciding to actually switch, is which distribution one's going to use (and which desktop environment but that's another thing). Since I work with SUSE Linux Exterprise in the company, I wanted to use OpenSUSE. So I downloaded a Live CD of it, wrote it on a USB drive and attempted to start it. It didn't work, it hang on a "Assuming drive cache: write through" message referencing the USB drive. To see whether it's a problem with USB, I went ahead and installed it. This time, it worked, and I was welcomed with GNOME. And while I was making my first steps in this new world.. it hung itself up. Just like that. It still did after several reboots. So I was thinking, maybe it was a driver issue because I experienced dozens of those in the past. So I downloaded Ubuntu to see if this would work, and the Live CD did. I didn't install it, though. It's popular and maybe it has the highest compatibility with different kinds of hardware (due to easy access to proprietary drivers) but I thought to myself, I don't want a distribution aimed at beginners. I also used Linux Mint on my netbook and found it too much pre-configured (but Cinnamon was cool!). So I decided to go with Debian out of a few reasons. I like how Debian puts you in control while you don't need to configure everything in detail. There's this huge software repository, of course. It's well documented and supported.I also like Debian's mindset about free software, like the DFSG (there also were some guidelines on behavior inside the community or something like it but I don't find the links anymore ).Installed, booted, same hanging. Here the DE would "crash" and show a shell with one repeated message from nouveau: "GPU lock". This is where I knew it has to be the open source driver causing this; it forced me to use the proprietary driver for now. Its installation could be done in two ways: By downloading it from nVidias homepage or from Debian's non-free repos. I chose the latter since it was easier to set up. I even found a guide for this. Anyway, the drivers fixed the only hardware problem I had with switching. Next steps included the configuration of the OS for production. Setting up Cinnamon This included spawning a few desklets and altering the taskbar. xkcd on your desktop, what could be cooler than being greeted with one of these when you log in? And of course a system monitor. Mounting the other drives I reserved a 500 GiB partition for Linux, but there's still the other half of the hard drive plus my Windows 8.1 SSD and a 2 TiB media drive, all of which I wanted to have access to from Linux. Mounting the SSD and the media drive was easy and I "hardcoded" it directly into /etc/fstab. But the other half of the hard drive caused a small error. The thing is, it still contains a working Windows installation which I kept there to allow troubleshooting the SSD in case it failed. mount told me it wouldn't mount the partition in read-write mode because Windows was allegedly not shut down completely. I don't know what the Windows 8 bootloader is doing but going through man mount I found an option to clear the hibernation cache or something which did the trick.Installing and setting up programs I needed I was using mostly open source and cross-platform software on Windows, in general software which was also available on Linux. Even migrating settings sometimes involved a simple move command (like Firefox and Thunderbird profiles). Also installed Steam and Wine. And Steam on Wine, though I use this combination in very rare occasions. I was very surprised to see almost all games I played on Windows were available as Linux builds on Steam. So much for "Linux is not ready for gaming". Also: openvpn and airvpn, both of which work much better than on Windows in terms of stability, qbittorrent, vlc, PDF editing tools, a number of others as well. Some of these apps were installed to replace already included things, for example zsh instead of bash.Overall experience Linux is a wonderful desktop OS. But it depends on many points how easy or difficult it will be for you. Sometimes the switch fails because of unsupported hardware. As you have read, the open source driver nouveau has its problems with certain nVidia graphics cards. When I searched for this on the internet I found out I am not the only one with this: nVidia don't support nouveau like they supported nv so most work on nouveau had to be done by reverse engineering their proprietary drivers which involved much work and time I imagine. Most people at my age don't switch because they use Windows for gaming, especially for playing the notorious "triple A" games which are traditionally Windows/DirectX only, using the newest tech hardware and software can offer. I can understand this point of view, even I still have Windows on my SSD which I see as a last reserve when Wine fails. There was no reason to boot Windows yet so update-wise it's like 60 days behind. But in most cases it fails because people have no experience with Linux. Most of them expect it to work like Windows. "Windows != Linux" is often cited in this case - Windows is not Linux. Linux does not aim to be like Windows, Linux also doesn't want to be a replacement for Windows. Understanding this is key if you're new to it. If you do the switch, be ready to read. Like, a lot. As for me, I had experience with Linux before. The hardware problem was a small one, multiple smaller complications arose, ensued, were overcome and I don't focus my time on gaming. My choice is clear. What about you? Planning on switching? Maybe you already use Linux? If yes, tell us which distribution and desktop you use and why. Give some tips for "potential switchers", for newbies and for pros if you like. Windows you ditch, to Linux you switch. Edit: I have stumbled upon my second self on Reddit who wrote this:

  11. Hi, my setup is a fresh install of Debian 9 and i run Eddie in an lxde session. everything works perfect, except the dns. Sometimes it seems to work at first but that's always right after you did reconnect to the vpn, so idk what that means. Perhaps any other application editing iptables etc? i didn't find anything like that, at least for now. would be really nice if someone has any idea here if you need any files just ask and I post Edit: some more information: i already tested all the DNS modes(auto and the 2 "linux only" ones), none work. I also tried to add a dns myself but nothing worked
  12. Hi all, I have been using the program since v2.10, but only from CLI. I have not been able to run the program from GUI, regardless of Linux platform/version or deb/portabel version. The OS is running virtualized. Debian is preferred, but not mandatory. Logs are showing the same errors (null reference, GDI+ status: Invalidparameter) on all the Linux distributions. I'm not ruling out installation errors on my part, so feel free to enlighten me on the correct procedure on latest Debian 8 version. 15. I tried from different AirVPN servers (some NL, Sweden, FR and others) to visit wiki.debian.org but it says: ForbiddenYou are not allowed to access this! ---- It opens when I try it without AirVPN... also it opens via TOR...
  16. Hi all. I just signed up for service and am a newbie when it comes to this stuff. I am using Debian jessie, and have successfully installed the AirVPN client. How do I set up my torrent client (Transmission) and my browser to utilize AirVPN's services? Thanks!
  17. Hi, I've been using ufw/gufw for a long time now to prevent leaks which works great after I followed worric's guide https://airvpn.org/topic/5586-prevent-leaks-with-linux-firestarter-also-stop-traffic-when-vpn-drops/?do=findComment&comment=5642 However there's one drawback, which is that all IP's must be resolved prior to connecting because the DNS resolution doesn't get through the firewall. The problem with this is that you can't let it choose the best server for the area/region by resolving for instance gb.vpn.airdns.org. It seems that the best you can do is get a random selection from the list of servers. Is there a way around this? For example to only let that dns query through? or am I wrong somehow? Any clarification is greatly appreciated! Edit: Grammar
  18. Hi, is the problem about gnome network-manager-openvpn solved in debian 7? Thanks you.
  19. I read in the how to section that there is a security flaw in Debian's current implementation of OpenVPN Network Manager where it doesn't check the server's certificate. From what I've tried, I really like Debian, so this is a shame. However, I recently found out about Debian Testing and Debian Sid. Is the flaw fixed in these releases? I ask because I've not found Eddie to be very good in Debian for a number of reasons: it needs to be a window rather than something accessed from the taskbar; my DNS leaks; the built-in fix for DNS leaks makes it unable to connect; it frequently crashes when I try to exit; the speeds aren't anywhere near as good as when run through network manager. So this is not a good solution to the problem. I find running plain OpenVPN is too technical. Suggestions?
  20. UPDATE Due to multiple, critical problems in network-manager-openvpn which after years have not been solved we recommend to NOT use it. Please understand that we will not provide support to network-manager-openvpn. In GNU/Linux we recommend that you run our free and open source software "Eddie", or our free and open source software "Hummingbird", or OpenVPN directly 21/04/2014: network-manager-openvpn runs OpenVPN so that OpenVPN does not check the server certificate. Therefore we DO NOT RECOMMEND usage of network-manager for security reasons. This issue is already fixed in newest version not yet available in Debian 7 Wheezy Download your configuration file from the page Config Generator Select "Advanced Mode" Tick "Separate certs/keys from .ovpn files" Save the downloaded zip-file somewhere, say in ~/.airvpn. Unzip it. Five files should be extracted. Try to make sure nobody but you can read the file user.key, because that one is secret. Erase the zip-file. Or at least, make sure only you can read it (since it contains the secret user.key file inside) Install the package named network-manager-openvpn-gnome, which is a plugin to NetworkManager handling OpenVPN connections. The install will automatically include all needed packages, like openvpn etc. Perhaps you'll have to log out and log in again, or even restart the computer or something. To check that openvpn plugin was properly installed in NetworkManager, click on the nm-applet (the NetworkManager icon) => VPN Connections => Configure VPN. In the little window that comes up, click the Add button. Is there an OpenVPN option in the menu? Good. But don't click on it. Just close the windows. This was just a check. Click on the nm-applet (the NetworkManager icon) => VPN Connections => Configure VPN In the little window that comes up, click the Import button. In the file chooser that comes up, find the previously downloaded file air.ovpn (perhaps you stored it in the ~/.airvpn directory?) A new little window comes up. It is pre-filled with the necessary airvpn-configuration stuff. Click the NetworkManager applet. Under VPN-connections, you should now be able to select the VPN-connection named air. After a little while, the applet icon should be decorated with a little padlock. For any comment or feedback, you can find the discussion here. Thanks to HugeHedon for this article.
