  1. Hi guys, I've subscribed to the Airvpn service about 4 months ago and I'm very happy with it. Nevertheless, as a Linux user (currently Lubuntu 16.04) which isn't using the client option, it was becoming somewhat annoying to turn on and turn off the openvpn and the stunnel in different terminals every time. Few days ago I sat and wrote a small CLI script in python, that is automating the process of connecting and disconnecting to the Airvpn service. The script can be found here: https://github.com/hemulin/airvpn_toggler Simply put, what it does is: When turning on - 1) Scanning the configs files folder and asking you from which country you wish to exit 2) After you choose a country, it turns on the stunnel as a background process and waiting for it to finish the initialization 3) After the stunnel init has finished, it turns on the openvpn as a background process and waiting for it to finish init. 4) After the openvpn has finished its init, the script validates that the external IP has changed and if yes, adding a system tray indicator to show it is connected. When turning off - 1) Killing the system tray indicator, the openvpn and the stunnel processes. 2) Validating that the external IP has changed. Currently it is working well for me, but I still consider it to be a "work in progress", so (1) I still improves it and (2) Feel free to ask for features (and of course, forks and pull requests are welcome). Cheers, Hemulin
  2. So, I'm running a distro of Linux called GalliumOS. It's made from the ground up to work better with Chromebooks (I'm using an Acer CB3-131 Chromebook) than other distros, but it's based on Xubuntu. It should, in theory, work fine with the Linux version of AirVPN. I wasn't able to get the .deb version of the installer working, but the official non-mono portable version launched just fine. However, when I tried to log in, I got a "Cannot login. (Bad PKCS7 padding. Invalid length 0.)" error message. I have NO idea what this could be about, and I'm looking for any help I can get. I'd like to add that I'm new to Linux in general, so this may have something to do with my difficulty in resolving this issue. Anyway, thanks for any help. It's appreciated.
  3. first off thanks for your time for trying to help with this issue. long story short I use debian linux to conntect through open vpn I go and disable IPv6, I try to connect to the vpn via command line. But when I do this I cant do anything on the web, or use ping or nothing. when i connect using the terminal i due the ifconfig and see the tunnel is active. it only when i quit the connecting is when everything return to normal ( web, ping, ect). any ideals on this one cause i been trying to figure this one out for couple of days and i cant find the answer.
  4. Hi all, First-time poster with a real head-scratcher (to me, probably obvious to others). I'm trying to set up a server on Google Compute Engine with AirVPN. I created a Ubuntu 16 VM from scratch, installed OpenVPN, generated a config and ran sudo openvpn config.ovpn (I renamed the config file). By all appearances this works fine. I lose my connection (as expected) and can reconnect via the Persei external IP through a forwarded port to 22 over SSH. Great, right? However I can't ping anything, can't connect to any repos via apt-get, can't do anything on the internet at all really. After some investigation I find that I can ping IPs, but can't ping any domain names or use nslookup. Ok, DNS is messed up, but no idea why... In trying to fix this, I realize I also can't use sudo for anything. Just using sudo nano /etc/rc.local to alter a file, for example, results in the terminal doing nothing (cursor goes to new line, but no output). I can Ctrl-C to escape though. Note: This weird sudo issue didn't happen when I tried this same process on Debian Jesse, however the DNS problem did. I also tried using the AirVPN-provided openvpn binary, but all the same problems occurred. So I'm stuck. I've built servers before (on Digital Ocean) with ubuntu and didn't run into this weird DNS/Sudo problem. Here's my config sans certs, but I didn't change a single line from what AirVPN generated. client dev tun proto udp remote 94.100.23.162 443 resolv-retry infinite nobind persist-key persist-tun remote-cert-tls server cipher AES-256-CBC comp-lzo no route-delay 5 verb 3 explicit-exit-notify 5 Any help this community can provide would be much appreciated!
  5. A maybe quick and probably elementary question: In a Linux Mint Virtualbox installation running Eddie with Network Lock active, do I need to/should I have any additional firewall going?
  6. Two days ago, I switched to version 2.11.3 to fix the issue with the client disconnecting in a loop. This fixed the problem but now I cannot use the Connect to recommended server button as latency tests do not complete (that was yesterday) or only after a lengthy delay (today - between 3 and 4 minutes). When it starts up, it quickly goes from 150 or so tests to 2 or 1 with the following message: Waiting for latency tests (1 to go). Is there any way around this limitation? Am I doing something wrong? I am using Linux Mint 17.3 and the AirVPN client 2.11.3. I had the Network Lock activated initially but removed it. Below is the log file. The latency tests executed between 10:36:41 and 10:39:40. 8. Hello everybody! I use Opera 16.12 on Linux Mint 17.3 Rosa. Now I have even made a IP check. Most sites show me the AirVPN address of each country. On this page and some other pages, my IP6 address appears. Page: heise.de/netze/tools/meine-ip-adresse/ I have checked my router This IP6 address and is identical to the IP6 address of the router. It does not matter if I have enabled in Opera JavaScribt or not. Connected I'm with the AirVPN. If you visit with Firefox these pages that IP6 address will not be displayed. How is that possible? Thank you very much
  9. Nevermind, I fixed issue. Re-download package.
  10. I'm trying to use the portable version (no mono) of the client on Linux Mint. When I try to connect to a server I get an error "OpenVPN is already running". I don't think I have anything running in background that would cause this message to appear. I have one more VPN client installed on my machine from other provider but I have to manually start it. I checked on System Monitor for processes with "vpn" in name and I didn't find anything. Do you know what may cause this and how to solve the issue?
  11. I'm not sure where to start on this one tbh. I was sat looking at my comp the other day and came up with the idea of using my router firewall (multi OS boot PC) to reject the majority of unwanted traffic. At the moment on my linux mint install (I'm very new to linux - 2 weeks) this is done by iptables and similar setup on windows OS. With windows this isn't a problem as the tap adapter produces a MAC but on my linux install it uses Tun masquerading as my eth adapter IP/no MAC. I should probably first ask is there a need - it would make life easier and rejects traffic at the router reducing network load, a second(1st) line of leak defence if an accidental change is made? I can't setup a firewall rule on my router (non wrt/tomato) that will give the restrictions needed without a separate MAC or IP to my physical adapter. I have tried to setup a Tap adapter on my linux install and ultimately failed. I have tried (linux mint) using gnome network manager (bridge utils installed) ticking the box use tap and downloaded Airvpn config files (no extra lines at point of download) replacing the lines in the file after putting in directory 'dev tun' with 'dev tap0' along with bridge ip's etc and without. I did read somewhere I may need to change 'update-resolv-conf'... Basically I'm out of my depth without help at this stage and I didn't want to make the huge number of changes some articles I read gave guidance for without further advice and guidance. In summary: 1- Will this indeed work well as a second leak protection measure? 2- Is it worth the effort? 3- Thoughts on the idea? 4- How do I change to use a Tap instead of tun with minimal/succinct changes? IF this makes no sense at all, please feel free to pull me up on it
  12. Hello - using openvpn by importing vpn config files the normal way (not bundling executables). This works on Ubuntu 16.04 and Manjao 16.06 linux so far: I find it only works if I TICK on use LZO Compression (which by default is unticked). It does not work if unticked 1. May i ask why this is the case ? 2. Will this affect my anonimity or connection in any detrimental way ? 3. Will someone be able to update the guide on the How to for linux to update this ?
  13. hi, i'm unable to use eddie so connect to airvpn using the terminal. however, this means that my system uses my ISP's dns servers and not airvpn dns servers. the guide on how to accept push requests mentions that I need to add the following to my openvpn configuration file: now please know that I am a dummy. i have tried putting this script into different openvpn files but have had no luck. could someone tell me exactly in which file this goes and exactly where in the specified file? i've also looked at the config generator but cannot find the "customs directives" field. thanks for any help
  14. So I'm running Ubuntu-MATE 16.04 and I've installed network-manager-openvpn-gnome, downloaded the certs. Added Air to my list of VPN's. All seems to work fine, I can connect and get the message that I have connected, however I cannot connect to any website, it just comes up Resolving host and then states that the site cannot be reached. Also on a side note, the .deb package is busted.
  15. hi, over the last two days i have had real difficulty using the airvpn client. it remains stuck on the checking authorization phase and does not progress. i have to keep killing the process and retrying it in order to get a secure connection. anyone facing similar issues? any solutions? thanks
  16. Everyone knows Firefox. It's an extremely popular browser known for its versatility and a bit of a focus on privacy/security. Just a bit because Mozilla made the news with some questionable things, especially the Sponsored Tiles may have surprised some regular users. Still, Firefox is on top of everything since it's (mostly) open source and very extension-friendly - something other browsers just can't say about themselves (if they could talk ). The Chromium part of Chrome might be open source, but Google built in many proprietary parts.Opera is just based on an open source renderer, the rest is proprietary.Internet Explorer, or Edge, is proprietary software in its entirety.Every other browser you might have heard of is likely to be based on the Firefox codebase, so you don't have much options if you are looking for a FLOSS browser on your PC - it will be some flavor of Firefox, where every flavor alters/hardcodes something else in comparison to the original. Waterfox is no exception: It's based on Firefox. It's even so much based on it, you could think this is Firefox. So what does Waterfox change, and why am I writing about it? One of the annoyances of Firefox is that Mozilla doesn't offer a 64-bit version officially, there's only a beta. Waterfox is designed to run on those systems, even on 64-bit versions of Windows XP. Also, a few benchmarks have shown that Waterfox increases the browser's performance. But I wouldn't write about Waterfox if there weren't changes related to your "sense of openness" or privacy. So, in comparison to Firefox, there are no Sponsored Tiles - they were completely removed. all Telemetry/data collection things were removed.Encrypted Media Extensions (the proprietary DRM part) are disabled.the Pocket integration (also proprietary) was removed.the plugin whitelist was removed, containing mostly proprietary plugins (on install, those plugins will be enabled without the user explicitly enabling them; I think this tech is no longer used in Firefox, anyway, but stlll). As a result, unsigned extensions are allowed to be installed again. Less secure for normal users, but gives you back your freedom of plugin choice AND your ability to run older plugins Want to test it out? Just install it. It uses your existing Firefox profile, so when you launch it you will find everything right where you left it. You can independently uninstall Firefox or Waterfox without issues. Download it from the website or just compile it yourself. -- Update 01.01.2017 -- As of Waterfox 50.0, it is possible to build Waterfox on Linux, making Waterfox available for all major platforms. I'm now considering Waterfox again.

  18. Hi everbody, I wanna use VPN over TOR but there is no Internet traffic after successfully VPN connection. Besides VPN connection disconnects almost after 1 minute because of TCP connection timeout. I've configured proxies from Advanced section of NetworkManager and I'm using SOCKS protocol as proxy type. I'm using Linux OS and NetworkManager to manage my network interfaces and VPN connections. My OpenVPN version is 2.3.0. I've already read this manuel but I couldn't find any solution. Is there any suggestion to overcome this problem? https://airvpn.org/tor/ Solution: - Use Eddie client, - Enable control port and cookie authentication in your torrc file as described at this URL https://airvpn.org/tor/ - Set Tor as connection mode in AirVPN -> Preferences, don't use TCP + Socks Proxy as me (my first mistake) - Be careful with the port numbers; because default port numbers in manuel and Eddie client are respectively 9150 and 9151 but in my torrc file they are 9050, 9051 and it's very easy to overlook for example my situation. (my second mistake) - You can export ovpn configuration file which is special for "VPN over TOR" from Eddie client, so you can use that file to connect VPN from command line using openvpn command. For me it's more easy than using Eddie client.
  19. This is the first VPN that I've managed to install and get working SEAMLESSLY on Linux. I've tried HMA, PIA ExpressVPN and they are all rubbish for Linux. This looks promising. Congratulations all round
  20. https://fruho.com is an open-source, zero-configuration VPN manager. It supports automatic setup and allows easy switching between VPN providers. AirVPN is supported, and this could be a great alternative to anyone who chooses to use this instead of Eddie, for example in case your distribution is not officially supprted by it. The developers always add new providers so it might soon become a very promising project. Which VPN services are supported? Curently we support "one click" import from the following providers: VpnBook (free)SecurityKISS (free or premium)Mullvad (free trial or premium)HideIpVPN (free trial or premium)VyprVPN (free trial or premium)AirVPN (premium only)CactusVPN (free trial or premium)ibVPN (free trial or premium)
  21. Hello everyone, I've been an AirVPN customer for about a year now and absolutely love it for many reasons. The only issue I really have is Raspberry Pi support. I just got an RPi3 a few weeks ago and want to set it up as a media server/P2P box. This makes a stable VPN connection with a network lock an absolute necessity. From what I've read here, Eddie is not and probably will never be supported on any Raspberry Pi. I can understand that's a relatively small concern for Air considering the limited use compared to OSX, Linux, and Windows, so I'm not going to complain too much. I will say that it's really a bummer as I love Eddie and it's always running on my PC. So far, I've had to settle by running openvpn with a config file from the terminal (I should mention i'm running Raspbian) with Firestarter as a kill-switch. The problem is I can rarely stay connected for more than 12 hours. This may be due to my internet connection, or a problem with one of Air's servers, but it's a problem either way. This means every day, usually more than once a day, I have to plug my RPi into my TV (or SSH into it) to kill my P2P client, restart openvpn, and restart the firewall. This really isn't the seamless P2P/media center experience I was looking for. I've done a fair amount of searching and can't come up with anything. I was thinking about trying the Debain network manager, but I see that it is not recommended for security reasons, and I'm not sure it would solve my problem anyway. If anyone has any suggestions, I'm open to try just about anything as I really wan't to get this up and running. I'm even open to trying out a different OS for the pi if anyone thinks it will make a difference. Worst case scenario, I will try to write up something that does all of this manually. In that case I think my main problem would be detecting when the vpn connection goes down. If anyone knows of a good way to do that (i'll be using Java to make it), please let me know. This post got much longer than I had planned. Thanks for taking the time to read it and helping me out
  22. Hello everyone. I had a question for the forums today. Is it possible to run Eddie (or any other way to connect to AirVPN) on Tails OS? For those who do not know, Tails is a Linux based OS that is very secure and routes all connections through Tor. However, if I am not mistaken, since there is no VPN in that setup, the operator of the Tor relay node can see your actual IP, yes? So, is it possible to use AirVPN on Tails? I tried earlier but it gave me some sort of error when I tried to run the Eddie client's file. Also, will using a VPN on Tails make me more secure? If so, what are the benefits of doing so?
  23. Here's the simple problem that I don't know how to fix. I'm trying to use VPN over Tor (User -> Tor -> VPN -> Net). It works fine but I also don't want any traffic to leak so I need to use the network lock. If I activate the network lock, Tor can't connect to the Tor network. That means the AirVPN software can't connect to the VPN service because it needs to route through Tor first and that can't happen because the network lock prevents Tor from establishing a circuit. What to do?
  24. Starting this morning, my RPI servers started experiencing disconnects. I have to run tcp client, since UDP on 443 seems to get messed with somehow. Is there a fix? Everything has been working with TCP But suddenly, began disconnecting and reconnecting almost immediately again and again. Thankfully, I am sorted now. Based on info in the forums about possible DNS hijacking, I changed my openvpn config to Canada from all North America and for greater certainty reset my iptables rules from the latest client. Best way to do this, I found is by running the latest client on my linux laptop, exporting the rules using (as root) >iptables-save > iptables_2016-03-12.saved That generates a file that can be loaded on any linux box using: >iptables-restore <iptables_2016-03-12.saved then remembering to do: > sudo netfilter-persistent save This guarantees the network lock persists across reboots. My connections have been up 40 minutes and an hour plus since then. Anybody else notice anything?
