Eddie-UI cannot be installed as of version 2.24.6 [LINUX]

Recommended Posts

Hello! I am having some very frustrating issues ever since the 2.24.6 update has been out.   I started with the previous version using our default MX repositories and the update was picked up by the package manager. The weird thing is that it worked fine, but the problem is that whenever I run my package manager updates or try to install new applications, there is always this return error code (1) related to eddie-ui in the commandline/log.

I wanted to fix it because it always hangs my package installer whenever I try to install new apps from the repositories. So I did my best to research this topic, I tried "$ sudo dpkg --configure -a" and it displayed that there is an error related to eddie-ui. I uninstalled the app from the package manager, then I tried to install again. #

Regardless if using the MX package manager or running "$ sudo dpkg -i eddie-ui_2.24.6_linux_x64_debian.deb", the same errors are being output:

sudo dpkg --configure -a
Setting up eddie-ui (2.24.6) ...
Start eddie-elevated.service failed
Service install fail.
dpkg: error processing package eddie-ui (--configure):
installed eddie-ui package post-installation script subprocess returned error exit status 1
Errors were encountered while processing:
 eddie-ui

System info: Using MX Linux (MX21), 6.10 Kernel on AMD64. Not sure if this is accurate, but I think the glibc version is 2.31 (used "ldd --version" command).

Could someone please help me figure out what is going on? It is seriously driving me insane, everything was working fine and I rarely had any issue with this distro, but it seems not so much anymore. I have no idea what else to do except for a fresh install which I terribly despise because I have tons of things I need to backup from my directories.

Another question aside from this, I was always under the impression that Eddie-UI is using openVPN as the standard protocol, but now when I go to the settings menu, it seems it uses Wireguard. Has it always been like this? Is there a way to switch to openVPN like in the android app?

If you could share any insight on this issue, I would like to thank you in advance!

Hello!

The failure probably comes from the fact that Eddie service can be installed only on systemd based systems. MX Linux by default uses SysVInit, according to the documentation. We deliver the AirVPN Suite for Linux that supports SysVInit too. In the Suite, Bluetit is a daemon that can run both on SysVInit and systemd based systems. If you are interested:

It appears that I can only post once per day for some reason, so I will try to be as concise as possible.

Normally the init scripts are taken into account when an app gets approved through the main repository, which is why I find this incredibly odd. Maybe the update is actually dependant on sysctl, so the only explanation that it worked even though I am using a sysvinit session is probably because the app update was installed on top of a pre-existing Eddie version with Sysvinit scripts. That probably made the package manager fumble like this, but this is only an assumption, I don't have high enough technical knowledge to say for sure.

Could you please tell me if the AirVPN Suite with Bluetit is as easy/intuitive to use as Eddie-UI? One of the reasons I found the 2.24.6 update great is that the connections are super fast now, no more waiting for it to connect! So if that feature works the same in the AirVPN Suite, I wouldn't mind giving it a go.

Thank you for the reply and happy holidays!

Hello!

The Suite doesn't offer a GUI. Therefore if you prefer a GUI the Suite is a no-go.

The time to establish a connection to a VPN server is roughly the same, maybe the Suite is slightly faster.

The Suite doesn't offer specific connection modes such as OpenVPN over SSH/stunnel, so if you suffer blocks against WireGuard and OpenVPN you should prefer Eddie. On the other hand the Suite offers reverse traffic splitting on an application basis, which Eddie doesn't, in case you need it, and does not need the demanding Mono package (still needed by Eddie GUI). You can also enjoy an asynchronous client-daemon architecture by relying on two components of the Suite, Goldcrest (a client) and Bluetit (the daemon).

You can find the Suite thorough user's manual in the packaged file README.md

Kind regards
