Tailscale and AirVPN at the same time

Recommended Posts

Hi,

i did not include a specific client in the title on purpose.
I preferebly use Eddie - but i would not mind switching to the official openvpn or wireguard clients.

The question that i have is: I have a huge Tailscale mesh up and running. Up until now i have to disconnect vom AirVPN each time when i want to use it - and the other way around.
Is there any way to use them at the same time?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Is there any merit in using both? I mean, you'd operate two VPN connections at the same time.
Only way to operate them in tandem is to decide what to route through which VPN, aka split tunnelling.

Well i´m using one of them (Tailscale) for my office Mesh, it perfectly fits my needs.

But from time to time it´s necessary to use Airvpn from one of the clients.

Let me ask the other (lazy) way around: Is there any chance that you might go the mullvad way and cooperate with them? like: offering an exit node?

It sounds like you think I'm part of AirVPN team and what I write is the official stance, but it's not: All opinions are my own and my own only. Be advised.

Having written that, what do you mean by "cooperate with them", and what role does Mullvad play there all of a sudden? Does Mullvad offer exit nodes for Tailscale or something, like offering nodes to the Tor network?

I totally understand that you're no staff member, but I have to admit that I was speculating that you might have some inside knowledge.

And yes, they offer their service as exit nodes. Which would be perfect for me if airvpn would do the same.

Well… I don't see it coming to life in the near future. That's all I can offer you. 😕

Yes, they offer the ability to use any Mullvad server as an exit node.  The PROBLEM is they charge $5 a month for JUST THIS FEATURE, which is the same as what Mullvad charges for a full VPN.  So if you want to use Mullvad VPN and Mullvad exit nodes on Tailscale, then you have to pay twice (double) for the privilege.

Seems like it should be a free feature for Mullvad customers, or that Tailscale should include a Mullvad account for the $5/month, but they don't. Edited ... by ms2738

I am running Tailscale in a Gluetun VPN container... so my exit node goes over VPN.

Yes - the benefit is you can share a single persistent connection on a server or NAS with all your devices local or remote.  That way you don't need to install client software on multiple devices, and switching exit nodes is much faster than starting/stopping a VPN.  You can even let friends or family use the VPN exit node without having to give them your VPN credentials.  It's pretty sweet.
