ANSWERED [RESOLVED] Netherlands servers slow + high ping

Recommended Posts

I have been using the Netherlands servers for more than 5 years but in the last 1 or 2 months the ping has been unusually high. My normal ping is about 20ms but is now arround 60ms. Im getting 90ms ping in computer games where i normally get about 20-30ms. I have also noticed that the bandwidth seems to dip very low recently.

With VPN
PING 8.8.8.8 (8.8.8.8) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from 8.8.8.8: icmp_seq=1 ttl=108 time=65.8 ms
64 bytes from 8.8.8.8: icmp_seq=2 ttl=108 time=62.9 ms
64 bytes from 8.8.8.8: icmp_seq=3 ttl=108 time=60.5 ms
64 bytes from 8.8.8.8: icmp_seq=4 ttl=108 time=62.0 ms
64 bytes from 8.8.8.8: icmp_seq=5 ttl=108 time=63.7 ms

Without VPN
PING 8.8.8.8 (8.8.8.8) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from 8.8.8.8: icmp_seq=1 ttl=117 time=14.6 ms
64 bytes from 8.8.8.8: icmp_seq=2 ttl=117 time=14.6 ms
64 bytes from 8.8.8.8: icmp_seq=3 ttl=117 time=8.67 ms
64 bytes from 8.8.8.8: icmp_seq=4 ttl=117 time=20.3 ms
64 bytes from 8.8.8.8: icmp_seq=5 ttl=117 time=14.8 ms

Note that my original IP/connection is from the netherlands. Therefore, Dutch Internet connection -> Dutch AIR Server -> 8.8.8.8 should not increase the latency that much.

This does not happen for all iP addresses, for example:

With VPN
PING 1.1.1.1 (1.1.1.1) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from 1.1.1.1: icmp_seq=1 ttl=59 time=13.5 ms
64 bytes from 1.1.1.1: icmp_seq=2 ttl=59 time=15.7 ms
64 bytes from 1.1.1.1: icmp_seq=3 ttl=59 time=13.7 ms

Low geographic distance != low packet latency.

As you didn't provide any server names you noticed this with, checks cannot be performed and therefore further help cannot be provided. :)

Also for me Dutch servers have had terrible performance for the past couple of days. By default I connect to the best available server which is always a Dutch server. Although speeds have been very very bad the last couple of days, the Dutch servers still seem to be considered the best choice. I just did a quick check and with Elnath (default choice) I get 2.7 Mbit/s, with Melnick (another Dutch server, manual choice) I get only about 1.8 Mbit/s. If I connect to the best available Belgian server for example (default was Diadema just now) I have no problems, 70 Mbit/s.

Edit: some more speedtests with Dutch servers (none of them had a high load when tested):
Comae: 1.6 Mbit/s
Nash: 1.2 Mbit/s
Tiaki 1.1 Mbit/s
some other random server from another country (Canes, Romania): 48 Mbit/s
So it seems to be a problem with the servers from Netherlands in general.

As of today I'm not experiencing these issues anymore, seems to be back to normal.
