Maggie144 12 Posted ... I was wondering what your thoughts are on Apple's new "private relay" feature. "As detailed by Apple, iCloud Private Relay encrypts traffic leaving a device then routes requests through two relays "so that no one — including Apple — can use" or access a device's IP address, location, and browsing activity. More specifically, web traffic is first sent to an Apple server and stripped of its IP address. It then travels to a second server maintained by a third-party operator, where a temporary IP address is assigned before being sent on to a final destination." They wouldn't say yet who their third-party operator is. *edit* found this article https://fossbytes.com/apples-icoud-private-relay-vs-vpn/ and it brings forth more clarity on the matter, e.g. this feature only works with Safari. I am still curious to the applied method; request of a desired site is supposedly encrypted on device, then sent through an iCloud server to a third-party which is supposed to decrypt it, carry out the original request for the user, encrypt the received user-request and send it back to the user where it's encrypted again.. OpenSourcerer 1435 Posted ... So: iPhone -----> Apple ("strip" IP, definitely a proxy) -----> mysterious 3rd party (proxy/VPN) -----> destination? Only on Safari. Well. What the article doesn't tell is that this won't be available in China, Kazachstan, Saudi Arabia and a few other countries. What's the point if the countries in which you need such a feature the most are not included? Quote Hide OpenSourcerer's signature Hide all signatures NOT AN AIRVPN TEAM MEMBER. Maggie144 12 Posted ... typical double-speech from Apple, I remember when the Taiwan flag crashed iOS to appease China.. But I'm more interested in the method itself. It's sounds like using two Proxy-Providers, but somehow independent to provide anonymity? Quote Share this post Link to post
