Virgin Low Speeds Even After Troubleshooting

Recommended Posts

Have you installed the Wintun adapters?. Here are a couple of helpful links. If you are using the AirVPN v2.19.6 then they are already installed if not follow the instructions in this thread. I myself am on the VM500 package and get over 300Mbps with a good server through AirVPN.Also a lot of good advice in this thread on Virgin Media.

I have UPnP switched off and use port forward from AirVPN to qBittorrent. Something else though I just remembered, I use a Linksys router which has a prioritization option in the settings. My PC is wired while our other tech runs through the wifi. I found out that I needed to set this setting to 1024 x the ISP bandwidth, so if you are on the Vivid 350 package then in your router you need to set it to 358,400 otherwise it can cause a bottleneck between the VM modem and the router or something like that. This definitely works as when I had my previous VM200 package I forgot about it and couldn't understand why I wasn't getting any more when I upograded to the 500 Oomph package, as soon as I remembered and reset the figure from 204,800 to 512,00 I was getting the full 500mbps without AirVPN and between 200 and 350mbps when using AirVPN.

Quick thoughts off the top of my head, I checked edgemax router specs and see even the £178 and higher costing models use :MIPS64, 1ghz CPU.
I tried to google it but its not very clear and I was unable to check if this type of cpu supports what you need for full speed broadband performance ie 300Mbps+
and that is AES support.

Maybe you can email their support team and ask if your router supports AES or not is a quicker answer or post the question on reddit maybe they have a edgemax router reddit page.

Either way you got full speed via your PC so your PC, Virgin router and cabling is not at fault so am leaning on your Edgemax being the bottle neck here.

2 quick fixes, get yourself a good modern powerful router like the Asus RT-AC86U (maybe off amazon in case of easy returns) this router supports AES encryption support (you should be able to hit 300-350Mbps)

https://www.amazon.co.uk/ASUS-RT-AC86U-AiProtection-Accelerator-Aggregation/dp/B075WFL15D

Or if you are good with pfsense and configuring networks and router programming, install it on a spare PC and make sure the PC has an up to date cpu 3ghz+ or with AES support and then give it a go.
there is an excellent guide here:
https://airvpn.org/forums/topic/17444-how-to-set-up-pfsense-23-for-airvpn/?tab=comments#comment-40136
but its out dated:
another guide here:
https://airvpn.org/external_link/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fnguvu.org%2Fpfsense%2Fpfsense-baseline-setup%2F

Personally I prefer and use the headache less stress version in going with Asus Router AC86u route, air has a guide but its out of date but still working
https://airvpn.org/forums/topic/15280-using-airvpn-with-asus-router/
but most tend to install an merlin firmware and then configure it, it allows you to add devices say Virgin media cable TV box to use WAN (real virgin internet) rather then VPN (air), virgin tv boxes need real internet and cant work on vpn anyhow.
