Hi there!

I'm having a number of issues with the Eddie client in Windows 10 that I'm hoping are fixable with the right settings, but I'm new to VPNs so I need a bit of help!

Firstly, I can't get Eddie to start up correctly on Windows boot - when it starts up it asks for administrator privileges. I don't want to have to manually provide these every single time I turn on my computer - it there a way to make Eddie run transparently in the system tray without asking for attention?

Secondly, it takes anywhere between 30-45 seconds to connect to a server which is unacceptably slow. Most of this time seems to be checking the IPv6 route. Is there a way to speed this up? (NordVPN, by comparison, would connect in 1-2 seconds).

Thirdly, the app takes about the same amount of time to disconnect and close. Is there a way to speed that up? It also frequently blocks shutdown.

Fourthly, the network lock only seems to work when the client is running, meaning my IP will leak when my computer boots before Eddie starts. Does anyone know of a good way to make the network lock to the VPN always, all the time (e.g tips on how to do this with Windows firewall?).

Fifthly, Eddie starts last of all my startup programs. Is there a way to adjust the order so that it is the first thing that starts up on boot?

Thanks in advance

On Linux, in Eddie Preferences > General, there is an option to "Don't ask elevation every run". I don't know if there is such an option in Windows, please look there.

We might answer these with more info. Fully connect, then disconnect. After that, click the lifebelt icon in Logs tab and paste or upload the output here.

Of course, NetLock only works with Eddie running, that's by design. Can't remember if we ever had someone do a permanent NetLock with Windows Filtering Platform, but it definitely was done successfully with Windows Firewall and COMODO. For example here:

Not aware of any way of doing this with native tools, but then again, I Am Not A Windows User™. The internet suggests setting up scripts to execute things in the order you want, but the script will most likely be started as late as Eddie would.

Thanks Giganerd for the very helpful reply!

"Don't ask elevation every run" worked and now Eddie does start up quietly! Do you know if there is a way to disable the splash screen as well?

I will look into the post you linked RE firewall rules, thank you.

In regards to the slow connection time, here is my connect/disconnect log. Is there anything in there that indicates a problem?

There is no way of doing so.

Your connect took 20 seconds and your disconnect 7 this time. It hangs mostly on TEST ROUTES (5 seconds) and on IPv6 route checking (5 seconds), rest is pretty much normal. I'd say this is bearable. The disconnect time is okay.
Please post another system file if you come close to the 30-45 seconds you mentioned.

The problems are intermittent unfortunately, which can make identifying and resolving them difficult. However, the issues, while intermittent, are very bad.

For example, this morning when I started up my computer Eddie froze on "Connect with daemon for system privileges". It did not prompt for administrator privileges and simply hung there (for 5+ minutes) until I killed it with task manager. Then Eddie would not connect when I started it manually, forcing me to restart my computer. This seems to be happening maybe once every 3-4 boots, even with "Don't ask elevation every run". Does anyone know what might be causing these problems and how to debug them? Is there a way to access the log if the main window is unable to load?

I am running a brand new Huawei Matebook using Windows 10 version 2004.

Start via terminal/cmd/PowerShell. Eddie prints its own log to shell output along with .NET/Mono errors where you can copy it if needed. Start a PowerShell, then:

> cd C:\path\to\eddie\install\directory
> ./eddie-ui.exe

Generally, be sure to keep everything updated. Huawei system updates (drivers, UEFI and the like), Windows Update, etc. You could also try deleting the default.profile file in %APPDATA% (enter it like this into Explorer). The directory is either AirVPN or Eddie, I'm not sure.

Fifthly, Eddie starts last of all my startup programs. Is there a way to adjust the order so that it is the first thing that starts up on boot?

For Win10, my Eddie setting Activate Network Lock at Startup caused connection failed errors for an email and text messaging program. Instead of looking for Eddie to start first, I worked through this in reverse. I used the Task Scheduler to set a 2 minute start delay for the programs after Win10 startup. On the Triggers tab: At Startup>Edit (if the task already exists) >Advanced>Delay Task for: 2 minutes.

My computer does the same thing with the latest stable 2.18.9 release. It just hangs randomly at "Connect with daemon for system privileges", with Windows 10 and gets stuck on the splash screen. If i open Eddie again, it tries to open but says that Eddie is already running. If I open task manager and kill Eddie process, usually I can open it up again and run it, but sometimes I have to reboot and start over. I used to set it to start with windows, but it seems like it needs a delay or something. I ended up uninstalling, getting 2.16.3 and manually open it. I let it log on but I usually pick the server myself and it connects. I recently upgraded to a different SSD and reinstalled windows, so I would be willing to try different versions, even experimental to see if they work better.

The button "Don't ask elevation every run" is missing on 2.18.9 on my linux mint cinnamon 19.3 but shows up in mint 18.3 for the same version of Eddie.

In other words, it is simply missing from the interface on my new install of 19.3. This is the case for both Eddie appimage and the ppa install for 2.18.9.

I also randomly get the Eddie client, version 2.18.9, frozen on a splash screen and failing to load up on start in Windows. Killing it and restarting it causes the error listed above in the others' posts. The only solution I've found is to restart the entire computer. I actually made a post about it a month or two ago.

A lot of the issues I was having with Eddie client were resolved with upgrading to experimental 2.19.4 and checking Don't Ask Elevation every run. On a HP Mini PC I have running Windows 10, I was still having a few problems with it hanging, so I just manually open it and run it after windows starts. With every iteration of experimental release, I will keep installing the new experimental to see if the hanging gets resolved on that computer.

Same error here. Gets stuck at startup "Raising System Priv...". It seems Eddie continues to load and connect to some server in the background but the UI seems frozen.

System: Win10 Pro, 1909, Build: 18363.1198
Eddie: 2.18.9 currently, but had the same issue in experimental 2.19.4

hope the admins find a solution for this prob. didn't have the issue in 2.16.x - only after update to 2.18.9.

Disabling "fast startup" in system - energy options did it for me. Not happy I had to disable it at all but I haven't had the issue any longer. This should not be the standard solution however...

I'm using eddie 2.20.0 using wintun. Its working fine except for one quirk. In the overview window, the upload and download bits/s displays only function when connecting to server. Once connected, the 2 displays stay at 0 bits/s even though the connection is fine. I'm using windows 10. In linuxmint 19.3, the bits/s displays work normally.
