[SOLVED] No idea what I'm doing

Recommended Posts

So, I've had a look around and couldn't find an answer. I'll be the first to admit I'm not computer literate. I can't find a guide for this thing, so I have no idea what I'm doing.

I've downloaded the client. If I log on with OpenVPN then I can't use the Air client and vice versa. When I use either, this and other websites still show my real IP address.

I've had a look at my router and it can't support DD-WRT, apparently.

I've paid a subscription. So, can anyone explain to me how I set up a VPN here? :S Really confused about it all.

Hello!

That's correct, either you use OpenVPN directly, the OpenVPN GUI or the Air client. The Air client is an OpenVPN wrapper, so you must not have OpenVPN GUI already running when you initiate a connection with the client.

To begin with, just go with the Air client and send us the logs in case of any issue. In order to do so, please right-click on the Air dock icon, select "Logs" and click on "Copy to clipboard". Then paste here.

We're looking forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards

Hello!

The TUN/TAP adapter does not come up. Apparently, either it is not installed or it is disabled.

Please make sure that it is enabled:

On Windows XP: Open Control Panel-->Network and Internet connections-->Network Connections. Right-click on "TAP-Win32 Adapter V9" and select "Enable".

Windows Vista: Open Control Panel-->Network and Internet-->Network and Sharing Center-->Manage network connections. Right-click "TAP-Win32 Adapter V9" and select Enable.

Windows 7: Open Control Panel-->Network and Internet-->Network and Sharing Center-->Change Adapter Settings. Right-click on "TAP-Win32 Adapter V9" and select Enable.

If you find that the TAP adapter is already enabled, select "Disable", apply the change, then select "Enable".

If you find that you have NO TAP-Win32 adapter, something went wrong with the OpenVPN installation (maybe you did not authorize the installer to install the adapter driver). You'll need to install an adapter: please select "Start"->"All Programs"->"OpenVPN GUI"->"Utilities"->"Add a new TAP Virtual Ethernet Adapter". If the operation fails, you'll need to completely uninstall OpenVPN and re-install it, making sure to authorize the installation of any driver.

Please feel free to let us know whether the above solves the problem.

Kind regards

So I did that. I now have two TAP-Wins32 Adapter v9s.

I'm looking at that now and it reads "Unidentified network" and I'm still showing my real IP address.

Hello!

Please follow the support instructions.

If you already had a TAP adapter installed, you had to check whether it was enabled and not add another one.

Anyway, please revert back to just one adapter, check that it is enabled, try a connection, browse to our website and verify that the central bottom box is green and saying "Connected". If it's red, please send us again the logs.

We're looking forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards

Same as before, your website is claiming I'm not using the VPN, when the client tells me I am currently connected. I have a TAP-win32 Adapter V9 reading "unidentified network" and my wireless router is reading my wireless network.

Hello!

The TAP-Win32 adapter does not come up.

Assuming that you have already checked that it is enabled according to the previous post, and that now you have just one TAP adapter, please make sure that in Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Services the DHCP Client Service is started and running.

http://openvpn.net/index.php/open-source/faq/79-client/259-tap-win32-adapter-is-not-coming-up-qinitialization-sequence-completed-with-errorsq.html

Also, what is your OS version?

We're looking forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards

I'm running Vista, with all the various updates.

DHCP client service is started.

And it's still not working. Checked my Firewall, can't see that it's blocking anything.

Hello!

The main problem is here:

15:27 Warning: route gateway is not reachable on any active network adapters: 10.4.0.113

Either the TAP adapter is disabled, busy or it has not been installed properly.

Can you please try to uninstall completely OpenVPN and re-install it, making sure to authorize the installation of any driver?

Kind regards

That didn't work. I reinstalled, told it to instal everything. No errors or anything in the installation as far as I can see. According to my computer it's got the best driver possible at the moment. What else is there that I can do?

How do I change the IP-win32 to a different method?

Any help?

I've tried everything you've suggested and nothing's worked. What's wrong with my VPN/computer?

Hello!

There's a similar, known issue between some Windows Vista versions and OpenVPN. It might be related to your case. The fix requires a modification to the OpenVPN configuration file.

Please try to switch to OpenVPN GUI. Download the files you need with our configuration generator (menu "Member Area"->"Access without our client". Decompress the downloaded archive and copy all the files inside it in the OpenVPN configuration directory (C:\Program Files (x86)\OpenVPN\config).

Edit the Air*.ovpn configuration file with any text editor, and add the following lines:

route-method exe

route-delay 5

Save the file and close the text editor.

Launch OpenVPN GUI with administrator privileges (right-click on it and select "Run as administrator"), right-click on the OpenVPN dock icon, select the Air server in the menu and finally select "Connect".

After that, if there are still issues, please send us the OpenVPN log: right-click on the OpenVPN GUI dock icon, select the Air item menu, then select "Logs", finally copy & paste the logs here.

Kind regards

So I tried all that, added the two lines (should it be "route-method exe" and not "route-method.exe"? :S) and OpenVPN assigned me an IP address. However, your website and others are still showing my real IP. Here are the logs:

Hello!

Now please edit again the Air*.ovpn file. Please delete the line:

route-method exe

Please modify the "route-delay" line in the following way:

route-delay 10 50

and finally please send us again the connection logs.

Kind regards

Okay, tried that. Still nothing. Where exactly in the config file should I be putting this and does it matter if I'm using UDP or TCP? Here are the logs:

Hello!

You can put those directives anywhere in the configuration file. You can try both TCP and UDP ports.

Now please try to re-add:

route-method exe

Do not delete the line:

route-delay 10 50

And as usual please send us the logs at your convenience.

Kind regards

Thank you for all your help, I really appreciate it. I'm currently running PeerBlock, that wouldn't have an effect, would it? Here're the logs:

Hello!

No, PeerBlock should not interfere. Anyway, please try again with any firewall, antivirus, PeerBlock deactivated.

If it still fails, try to upgrade to OpenVPN 2.3_beta1, released just a couple of weeks ago.

Uninstall completely OpenVPN 2.2.2 and install OpenVPN 2.3_beta1 available here:

http://openvpn.net/index.php/open-source/downloads.html

Restore your configuration file to the original form (i.e. delete route-delay and route-method directives), or re-generate new files with the configuration generator, and try again.

Kind regards

I upgraded and now I can't even connect to a server. I downloaded the config files again and yea, nothing.

Hello!

Before upgrading, did you try a connection with any firewall, antivirus etc. deactivated?

Can you please send us the logs of the new OpenVPN connections?

Kind regards

I have discovered the problem. It seems that with Peerblock on, it disrupts everything. I disabled my firewall, PeerBlock and my antivirus and tried them all differently. I was able to use the VPN, properly (tested it here and on various what's my IP websites), but PeerBlock for some reason interferes with the connection. I'm not sure if PeerBlock will interfere with the service if I disable it, connect to the VPN and then renable it. Do you know?

Hello!

We're very glad to know that the problem is solved.

We don't know what may happen if you re-enable PeerBlock after the connection, you should try it to know for sure. You don't need PeerBlock anyway when you're connected to a VPN server.

Kind regards

It might depend on what block-lists or allow-lists you use in Peerblock. If you use a list that (erroneously) blocks (or not allows) an AirVPN server, then it might cause trouble.

Once AirVPN is running, you don't need Peerblock anyway.

Just make sure that you configure a firewall (f.ex. Comodo) on your PC such that all internet traffic is blocked if AirVPN accidentally disconnects.

Instructions for this are here:
