[SOLVED] CANNOT CONNECT THROUGH DD-WRT ROUTER

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I have been having trouble connecting to the Vega VPN (or any VPN for that matter) through my DD-WRT router. The router model is an Asus RT-N16. I have followed the previous thread that was dealing with a similar issue but have not had any luck in solving this issue.

I have tried 3 different version of firmware (the final firmware that I tried is version 19342.

I have double checked all my VPN settings and everything appears to be correct.

I should mention that my Asus router is behind another D-Link router that's connected to my cable modem. The schematic of my network is as follows:

ISP Modem -> DLink Router -> Asus (DD-WRT) VPN Router.

The DD-WRT router has the WAN interface disabled and is getting it's WAN information from the DLink router. I am able to access both the DLink router and the DD-WRT router via wireless without changing any network settings.

In addition, the DD-WRT router is set to work as a router as opposed to a gateway.

Below is the log from the status tab of the DD-WRT router.

Hello!

As far as we know, this setup can work, but only if the DLink Router is set to work in pure bridge mode. Can you please check that DLink Router is in bridge mode?

The DD-WRT router has the WAN interface disabled and is getting it's WAN information from the DLink router. I am able to access both the DLink router and the DD-WRT router via wireless without changing any network settings.

This may be a problem. You might like to read here for a setup extremely similar to yours which is now working:

https://airvpn.org/index.php?option=com_kunena&func=view&catid=3&id=1840&limit=6&limitstart=6&Itemid=142#1866

In addition, the DD-WRT router is set to work as a router as opposed to a gateway.

This is correct.

Kind regards

Nothing suggested seems to be working. I even tried switching from UDP protocol to TCP and still no connection.

Here's a question: do I even need the DLink router or can I eliminate it and run everything (VPN, wireless, etc) through the DD-WRT router?

As a test I removed the DLink router and setup the DD-WRT router to act as the gateway as opposed to just the router. I then readjusted the VPN setting but STILL cannot connect through the VPN (at least that's what the AirVPN website is telling me). Here is the log that I have from my DD-WRT router:

Hello!

Can you please try different servers?

Here's a question: do I even need the DLink router or can I eliminate it and run everything (VPN, wireless, etc) through the DD-WRT router?

If your ISP does not force you to use it for some reason, you can eliminate it.

Please help! Everything was connecting just fine but for the last couple of days I have been down. I've tried everything I can think of but still nothing.

Can you please try a connection directly from your computer?

My ISP does not require that I use the DLink router, it was just a router that I already had lying around and put in place because I thought that I would need it.

I then went ahead and installed TunnelBrick and attempted to connect to the same VPN (Librae). I was able to connect but the longest time I was able to connect for is approximately 30 seconds and then it attempts to reconnect. Here is the log from the TunnelBrick program:

Hello,

I tried connecting to Librae through the UDP protocol and it still did not work. Here is the log from the DD-WRT router:

Hello!

It looks like a firmware problem. In this case it can't be solved without a different firmware re-flash. Since you have already tried 3 different versions, let's check your settings. You said that you double-checked them, but just in case...

I then went ahead and installed TunnelBrick and attempted to connect to the same VPN (Librae). I was able to connect but the longest time I was able to connect for is approximately 30 seconds and then it attempts to reconnect. Here is the log from the TunnelBrick program:

You're using the wrong Tunnelblick version. 3.2.8 is not compatible with Mac OSX 10.8.x (Mountain Lion). Please use an appropriate version:

Kind regards

Here is a list of the firmware versions I have tried since your last post:

DD-WRT v24-sp2 (06/08/12) mega - build 19342 (VPN did not work)

DD-WRT v24-sp2 (08/12/10) mega - build 14929 (VPN did not work). This firmware version was the recommended mega build listed off of the DD-WRT website for my router. However, there were several settings not in the VPN setup, such as:

- Set Hash Algorithm to "SHA1"

- Set Encryption Cipher to " AES-256"

- Select "Enable" NAT

- Set Local IP Address to the router's local IP address found earlier.

- Select TLS Cipher to "AES-256 SHA"

Would it matter if these settings were available? Both firmware versions tried to connect to Librae under UDP protocols.

I will try another firmware version this evening when I return home from work.

Hello!

Yes, they are fundamental. In their absence, you are forced to use a script to connect.

Kind regards

It definitely was the firmware. Switched to firmware version 18024 and was able to connect to multiple AirVPN servers. Not only that, was able to remove the DLink router from my network setup.

Thank you for the excellent technical support!
