airvpn.org and periodic problems with Amazon.com

Recommended Posts

For about a week now the AirVPN site becomes unreachable after I've been connected for 1 to 2 days. I first noticed it when the VPN helper plugin in Vuze was red. To regain access to the AirVPN site I have to switch servers but that only works for a while before the site becomes completely unreachable again.

I've also been having issues with Amazon.com for about the same amount of time. On Amazon I will periodically get a "Secure connection failed" screen and it can take multiple refreshes to get the site to load.

The IMDb issue seemed to be fixed for a while but it's back again.

This all seems related to AirVPN's DNS servers and it seems like it's been getting worse and affecting more sites. I've been using AirVPN for years and I've only seen an issue with one site being blocked for a couple days until recently.

I hope this problem can be identified and resolved soon because it's starting to defeat the whole purpose of having a VPN.

Edit: I just tried to open Amazon.com and I got a "Server not found" page. I got the "Server not found" page for 5 refreshes than a "Secure connection failed" screen for 2 more refreshes before I finally got into the site.

I only use the Canadian servers and I've had all these problems on all the servers I've tried. I had to switch servers earlier tonight so I could get in and make this post, right now I'm using... Almach

Hello!

Have you tried airvpn.info?

Have you tried using different browsers?

Have you tried reading some of the other Amazon-related threads?

Have you tried some of the points written in the stickied thread?

Have you tried using the latest version of Eddie? Are you using Eddie at all?

The plugin you're referring to seems to be totally unnecessary and I'm not sure what purpose it serves. There's guides to setting up torrent clients, in my signature.

Moderators do not speak on behalf of AirVPN. Only the Official Staff account does. Please also do not run Tor Exit Servers behind AirVPN, thank you.

Have you tried airvpn.info?

No but I'll try it.

Have you tried using different browsers?

Yes and it doesn't make any difference.

Have you tried reading some of the other Amazon-related threads?

I only saw one thread and just read it, there didn't seem to be any answers and just people reporting problems accessing the site.

Have you tried some of the points written in the stickied thread?

I just read it and it seems like about the only thing I could try is disabling IPV6, I've been thinking about disabling that for years but haven't tried it yet.

Have you tried using the latest version of Eddie? Are you using Eddie at all?

Yes, I'm using the latest version of Eddie.

Yes I know that it's not necessary and I had Vuze configured correctly long before they even added the VPN plugin but it lets you know that everything is functioning correctly. It also lets me know if airvpn.org is unreachable. In the past it would be unreachable because of congestion and if I remember correctly once because of a DDoS attack on the site but more recently it's unreachable because the server I'm using seems to be blocked.

I also have many intermittent problems connecting to amazon.com when using airvpn. This has been happening for months, and I finally got frustrated enough to do a little (non-expert) searching.  This happens on multiple computers and multiple browsers when I use airvpn.

This morning, the browser reported ERR_SSL_VERSION_INTERFERENCE. A few minutes later, it connected to amazon. Then a few minutes later, it would fail again with DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN. And then a few minutes later it would work again.

When I use nslookup using the default unchanged airvpn dns, amazon.com resolves to 140.82.30.128, which is something at vultr (???):

# nslookupDefault Server:  UnKnown
Address:  10.6.240.1

> amazon.com
Server:  UnKnown
Address:  10.6.240.1

Non-authoritative answer:
Name:    amazon.com
Address:  140.82.30.128

>  140.82.30.128

Address:  10.6.240.1

Name:    140.82.30.128.vultr.com
Address:  140.82.30.128

MXToolbox shows that 140.82.30.128 is allocated to Choopa LLC (not Amazon):

In contrast, when I change the dns server within nslookup to 1.1.1.1 (cloudflare dns) or 8.8.8.8 (google dns), amazon.com resolves to addresses at 205.251.242.103, 176.32.98.166, and 176.32.98.166:

> server 1.1.1.1
Default Server:  one.one.one.one
Address:  1.1.1.1

> amazon.com
Server:  one.one.one.one

          176.32.98.166
          176.32.103.205

> server 8.8.8.8
Default Server:  google-public-dns-a.google.com
Address:  8.8.8.8

> amazon.com

which according to mxtoolbox are all IP addresses allocated to amazon:

Question: Why is the airvpn dns resolving amazon to an IP allocated to Choopa / Vultr (companies I've never heard of)? Why does the browser intermittently report ERR_SSL_VERSION_INTERFERENCE or DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN for amazon.com when using AirVPN?

One more note: when I checked the airvpn routing page to amazon (https://airvpn.org/routes/?q=https%3A%2F%2Famazon.com), it shows FAIL (in pink) for every row under the HTTP column.

Hello!

To allow access to Prime Video from any Air VPN server (same thing for Netflix USA and Hulu). Your packets are hopped to nodes with IP addresses belonging to residential US ISPs.

We are investigating. First step, we need to reproduce the problem. Currently we are unable to do it. Can you reproduce the issue regularly on specific servers?

Kind regards

It happens quite a bit, but it is sporadic, so I cannot reproduce the problem at will. I usually connect through Almach.

Is there a tool or debug logging step I could use that might be useful when the problem occurs?

BTW, the problem for me occurs when shopping/browsing for products on amazon.  I am not watching prime video through airvpn.
