um do i need to port forward

sorry im a total noob. i have air vpn up and running. i can browse the internet and use utorrent. my question is about "port forwarding" do i need to forward ports to be protected or can i keep doing what im doing? please assume my total ignorance about networking. sorry in advance if im asking stupid questions.
