Is it my imagination or does AirVPN increase internet speed when used on an overloaded, cheap motel router? Can a networking expert explain this please?

Prioritization. Either OpenVPN traffic is buffed (unlikely) or other specific traffic is nerfed.

I've read this a few times already in my few years here. A VPN connection sometimes really does increase the throughput. I'm glad it works in your favor

Exactly 0% chance this is happening, assuming you mean as worded and are running the VPN on the router. Turns out VPN was choking my fairly pricey router with overhead at around 30mbps. Turns out even an ARM CPU can't hack it at higher speeds, let alone MIPS. What you are likely doing, as I deliberately do often, is bypassing a poor peering route from your ISP to the destination. Well, just to end the little story, I setup a SOCKS and HTTP proxy on my old Nexus Player, which is Intel based, routed over the official OpenVPN client. I near max out my 100 Mbps connection on Airvpn using this method . I still use the router VPN client to catch any leaks and devices that have no proxy config(like my thermostat).
