openvpn tunnel options: remote command

Recommended Posts

can someone explain exactly what this feature does?

my setup at the bottom of my custom options =  remote us.vpn.airdns.org 80  <--  exactly how i typed it.

so if i understand right.  if my primary server under "server host or address"  goes down.  it WILL connect to this server within a few minutes?

Your remote us.vpn.airdns.org 80 will only give you the best server available for USA.

I would rather use(this offers you the whole-list of servers for USA):

----------------------

remote-random

remote us.airvpn.org 80

----------------------

Do an nslookup for both commands and you will see what I mean.

Flx thank you for the reply.  i JUST tried what you suggested.    my primary server was overridden and it connected randomly to us.vpn.airdns.org

how can it be configured so that when the connection drops it connects to a random working server?

thank you

my primary server was overridden and it connected randomly to us.vpn.airdns.org

point it to us.airvpn.org NOT us.vpn.airdns.org...

If you use Eddie client ->Custom config->type it like

---------------custom directive for Eddie---------------

remote-random

remote us.airvpn.org 80

--------------custom directive for Eddie----------------

If you use Native OpenVPN---->in .ovpn file

--------------.ovpn----------------

remote-random

remote us.airvpn.org 80

---------------.ovpn------------

Just tested it in Windows 10  Native OpenVPN client file for US and it works.

If it randomly connected to us.vpn.airdns.org that is how Eddie Client works.

how can it be configured so that when the connection drops it connects to a random working server?

just as I explained above.

--------so you add or modify the remote server port-----------------

remote-random

remote earth.airvpn.org 80

--------this will point to earth.all.vpn.airdns.org----->>give you All AirVPN servers alive and kicking

Post some logs,

Flex

Hello!

In the last examples "remote-random" is redundant. remote-random does not make sense when you use a single "remote" directive. Just for information.

Check the manual here:

https://community.openvpn.net/openvpn/wiki/Openvpn24ManPage

Search for "--remote-random":

--remote-random When multiple --remote address/ports are specified, or if connection profiles are being used, initially randomize the order of the list as a kind of basic load-balancing measure.

Kind regards

thank you for the reply/ verification.   i have seen this work on several occasions now.  i am able to see which servers seem to be having issues. (chamelon)

i find that server being "dumped" if you will on several occasion and i am connected to another server with the successfull use of the command i mentioned.

otherwise my connection would be down until i restarted the service!

Yes, that's because all of our *.vpn.airdns.org names rpertaining to zones (countries or continents) have their records updated every 5 minutes to resolve into the entry-IP address of the best rated VPN server in that zone. However please consider that TTL is 1 hour.

remote-random enters into play when you have multiple remote entries, which is another option you might consider.

Kind regards
