can not access gmail and some https sites with network lock on.

Recommended Posts

Hello,

After much searching I can not find the solution to this problem. I can not access gmail from thunderbird with network lock switched on or, occasionally, some https sites. Problem goes away when network switch deactivated.

Running Linux Mint 18.3 with eddie 2.14.0. and also previously eddie 2.13.6. Same problem also exists on another computer running kubuntu 16.04 with eddie 2.13.6.

I have also telnet to gmail server with network lock off;

telnet gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com 25
Trying 2a00:1450:400c:c02::1b...
Connected to gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com.

With network lock on:

telnet gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com 25
Trying 2a00:1450:400c:c0b::1a...
Trying 64.233.184.27...
telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection refused

I would be grateful for any suggestions.

Port 25 is blocked in any case, so when you are connected, no matter if network lock is on or off, you will not be able to access it.

You have to switch to port 465/587 for Gmail:

If port 25 works for you it means you are simply not connected or leaking traffic (IPv6), but that's not related to this topic.

Thank you for the response. My Thunderbird settings are configured correctly IMAP port 993 and SMTP port 465.  As I said earlier the problem also affects connections to some, although not all, https sites. All works well when network lock switched off.

What else could I check?
