Connect to a recommended server...

"Connect to a recommended server" always, without fail, 100% of the time, will connect me to servers in Toronto, Canada. I'm in the US, not anywhere remotely near Toronto. If the speeds I were getting from being connected to the Canadian AirVPN servers were impressive then I might not mind it, but they're anything but impressive (for me). So what gives with this?

 

Doing some experimentation with this I've found it weird that I can't even prevent Eddie from doing this. Under Countries I've whitelisted United States. I even went to so far as to blacklist Canada. And still "Connect to a recommended server" always connects me to Canada. What exactly is the point of whitelisting and blacklisting? Eddie does not work as I would logically expect it to, at least as far as it concerns connecting to a server which is best for me, in my country, and with low latency and good speeds. In selecting servers Eddie does not appear to be making a determination based on quickest ping times.

 

I'll speculate that AirVPN is doing this for load balancing reasons. But in forcing me outside my own country, and forcing poor performance on me, it's really just forcing me to have to manually select a server in my own country, and one which may impinge on AirVPN's objectives of load balancing. There has to be a better way.

That's caused by higher rating of Canada servers than USA servers. However:

That's unexpected. We can't reproduce the issue. Maybe you have ticked "Show all" in the "Servers" window, or you have a white list for servers too (in this case, servers white list takes precedence over country white list). Can you check?

When in the USA if Eddie is set to Speed scoring then you will connect to Canada servers. If scoring is set to latency, then you will connect to USA servers.

 

That's default behavior. If you've customized the white and black list, your experience may be different.

Show All is not ticked and never was..

 

The only servers I have white listed are US servers.

 

Furthermore, I have all other country servers blacklisted.

 

Still, without fail, 100% of the time, Connect to a recommended server connects me to Canadian servers. This is incredibly annoying. It shouldn't be this difficult.

When in the USA if Eddie is set to Speed scoring then you will connect to Canada servers. If scoring is set to latency, then you will connect to USA servers.

 

That indeed proved to be the problem. Setting "Scoring Rule" to "Latency" finally allows Eddie to select servers in my native land and actually makes Eddie obey the blacklist.

 

As much as I like AirVPN I'll have to say this is one idiotic issue. It needs to be fixed. What exactly is the point of a black list and a white list if it can be totally ignored by the app and overridden by a function that, from the user perspective, is less than obvious/intuitive as to everything it does? Obviously it does far more than merely prioritize server selection based on just server speed and latency. It also completely bypasses the blacklist, which is no minor issue. Blacklisting and whitelisting should take precedent over EVERYTHING else.

It sounds like a bug, can you help us reproduce it? Describe a step by step procedure to reproduce the bug with Eddie 2.14.2beta please at your convenience.

When you define two lists, one for the countries and one for the servers, the servers list takes precedence over the countries list. That's intended (we prefer this logic now: older Eddie versions performed an intersection of the lists and this caused a lot of confusion on users).

I'm running Eddie 2.13.6 on OSX Sierra 10.12.6

 

I think I've already explained, in quite some detail, the problem and how I've got Eddie configured, to wit:

What was causing the problem was having "Speed" selected rather than "Latency." In every case "Connect to a recommended server" connected me to Canada every single time without fail, even though Canada is blacklisted.

Hello!

 

Note that the fact that Canada is black listed is irrelevant in your case, because according to your description you have defined lists for the servers.

 

Try this:

- delete any list both on servers and countries

- white list United States

- test again

 

If the problem persists with the above list (i.e. Eddie connects to a Canada server) please send us a system report.

Weird, Im pretty sure I had "speed" set in mine (I never touched the option so its whatever the default is) and mine ONLY picks the servers I have in my list (I do have the Show All box unchecked as well). I have the six California ones listed, 3 Texas ones, and the two experimental IPv6 servers. And thats all it chooses from when it disconnects and tries to reconnect. More often than not, it just goes through the California ones first, and THEN will try to go to either Texas or like Belgium next. I hate it when it connects me automatically to Castor and the other IPv6 one though. Being in California, my internet goes down to DSL speeds coming all the way back from Belgium or The Netherlands hehe. Going to Google is a shock when you get there and its in Dutch or whatever language its in or when looking at a stores website for stock/locations and it thinks you're in Europe and cant find the nearest Target hahaha.
