Really slow (<1Mbps) speeds on all servers

Recommended Posts

I'm new to using a VPN so I could use some help troubleshooting this. On my normal connection I can get >50 Mbps most days, but on AirVPN I'm lucky to crack 1 Mbps, usually 500-800 Kbps. I've tried on at least 2 dozen servers, mostly in U.S. (where I am) and Canada, some in Sweden or Netherlands. I always pick servers with < 15% load and ping < 100ms. I've also tried at least 15 protocol/port settings across all 4 protocols). Occasionally I'll find a server that might get up to 3-5 Mbps initially but that will soon drop to <1. Router is a TP-Link AC1900 with stock firmware, computer is Windows 7 connecting over AC Wifi. All network adapters are set to obtain IP/DNS automatically. I suspect the router is the bottleneck here but I don't know how to begin diagnosing that. Help would be appreciated.

Edit: This is all tested on normal HTTP traffic tested on fast.com, speakeasy.com and speedtest.net

If you have the QOS engine turned on on your router your router might throttle your connection because it falsely believes your activity doesn't need as much bandwidth.  I had this issue with my Nighthawk router.
