No internet access when trying to use AirVPN with the Linux network manager configuration

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I bought the 3 days plan today to test AirVPN, I would like to use it with no additional software on an Ubuntu LTS (16.04) based Linux distribution and Mint as DE.

I used these instructions:

https://airvpn.org/topic/11416-using-airvpn-with-debian-network-manager-not-recommended/

All the steps worked fine, I can connect to AirVPN, the network manager as well as /var/log/syslog show that the connection is successfully established.

But as long as I'm connected to AirVPN it's not possible to access the internet anymore. However DNS seems to work, if I ping a website the IP it tries to ping shows up, but the ping itself doesn't work.

The only thing I can get a ping back is the AirVPN server I'm connecting to.

I searched for the problem, it looks like someone already had the same problem but it wasn't resolved in this thread:

https://airvpn.org/topic/22147-connection-established-but-no-internet-mint-181/

tun0 sends data but there it stays at 0 rx-bytes.

route -n shows the following:

0.0.0.0 10.4.0.1 0.0.0.0 UG 50 0 0 tun0
0.0.0.0 192.168.0.1 0.0.0.0 UG 100 0 0 eth0
10.4.0.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.0.0 U 50 0 0 tun0
169.254.0.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.0.0 U 1000 0 0 docker0
172.17.0.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.0.0 U 0 0 0 docker0
185.104.184.… 192.168.0.1 255.255.255.255 UGH 100 0 0 eth0
192.168.0.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 U 100 0 0 eth0

I tried the Eddie client on another device and it works in the same network here, but I would like to be able to use the VPN without additional software.

I had similar issues on Ubuntu. You can use the terminal as a workaround:

sudo OpenVPN your_config.ovpn

Cofig Generator: https://airvpn.org/generator/

Thank you, that works with exactly the same config files which I've tried with the network manager before.

I thought that the network-manager-openvpn-gnome package would use OpenVPN in the same way.

However there are differences with the routing, the first one is the network manager one:

default via 10.4.0.1 dev tun0 proto static metric 50
default via 192.168.0.1 dev eth0 proto static metric 100
10.4.0.0/16 dev tun0 proto kernel scope link src 10.4.9.7 metric 50
169.254.0.0/16 dev docker0 scope link metric 1000 linkdown
172.17.0.0/16 dev docker0 proto kernel scope link src 172.17.0.1 linkdown
185.189.112.10 via 192.168.0.1 dev eth0 proto static metric 100
192.168.0.0/24 dev eth0 proto kernel scope link src 192.168.0.104 metric 100

And this is the one when OpenVPN is ran from the console:

0.0.0.0/1 via 10.4.0.1 dev tun0
default via 192.168.0.1 dev eth0 proto static metric 100
10.4.0.0/16 dev tun0 proto kernel scope link src 10.4.9.137
128.0.0.0/1 via 10.4.0.1 dev tun0
169.254.0.0/16 dev docker0 scope link metric 1000 linkdown
172.17.0.0/16 dev docker0 proto kernel scope link src 172.17.0.1 linkdown
185.189.112.26 via 192.168.0.1 dev eth0
192.168.0.0/24 dev eth0 proto kernel scope link src 192.168.0.104 metric 100

I still would like to use the network manager, any ideas how to fix it?
