jessica.shoe 0 Posted ... Anyone able to get netselect (http://apenwarr.ca/netselect/) on linux to work at picking the "best" server? Does nothing but timeout for me. Quote Share this post Link to post
OpenSourcerer 1471 Posted ... So without having looked at the source code, am I right this thing pings servers for a certain time and determines the one with the best average time and packet loss rate? While an interesting idea, latency on its own is not always the best indicator for if a server is the "best". But, well.. What's your full command line? jessica.shoe 0 Posted ... the command is pretty straight forward: netselect -vv gemma.airservers.org homam.airservers.org kleeia.airservers.org mimosa.airservers.org This is an attempt to find the "best" server in Vancouver. I find no difference when using IP instead of hostname. Both timeout. Yet with a list of other servers, netselect works. My understanding of netselect, is it does more than just ping. I believe it also does a traceroute. Debian has adapted a version (netselect-apt) to choose their "best" mirror. Quote Share this post Link to post

OpenSourcerer 1471 Posted ... Apparently not, since most people use the AirVPN client which does test the servers in its own way. Those who choose not to use it usually use OpenVPN with one IP or let OpenVPN choose randomly via remote-random. Maybe I'll look into this myself if I find some time.
