Hello!

EDIT: please note that 109.105.111.14 is not Draconis IP address

That said, a 2% packet loss detected with a ping may or may not be significant. Please run mtr in order to have a more realistic overview. We don't detect packet loss problems on Draconis. Do you detect the same problem with other AirVPN servers?

We're looking forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards

i now im not pinging your server but im connected through your server so it should not make any difference as long as there isnt any problems with server im pinging which is highly unlikely

here is the html output from mtr http://dl.dropbox.com/u/30440768/Annat/mtr%20sunet.htm

options

64 byte package size and 1 sec delay between each package

as you can see there is 1% packet loss to your server

i do have packet loss when connected to castor as well but its not as bad

im connecting to your servers using my router/firewall pc wich runs pfsense http://www.pfsense.org/

could cause of the problem being me setting the wrong open vpn settings?

thanks for helping me out

Hello!

Well, we just checked that from inside Castor and Draconis there is no packet loss at all toward 109.105.111.14 (and several additional know hosts).

So it remains to be seen whether it's a problem between your ISP and those servers, or between your device and those servers.

First of all, try to mtr the entry-IP or the exit-IP of Castor and Draconis while you are NOT connected to the VPN. If there's packet loss, it is highly likely that the problem is somewhere between your ISP and Castor and Draconis datacenters, and that your OpenVPN configuration and your system are just fine. In this case, it will be unfortunately very hard to detect and solve the problem in a short time.

On the contrary, if you detect packet loss ONLY when connected to some Air server, try to connect to a TCP port of Castor and Draconis and see whether the issue is fixed.

Finally, although it's not very likely that this will solve the problem, try to disable completely pfsense firewall and see whether there's a change.

We're looking forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards

ok here is the result of mtr when im not connected to any vpn server

castor entry ip

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/30440768/Annat/mtr%20air%20vpn%20castor.htm

draconis entry ip

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/30440768/Annat/mtr%20air%20vpn%20swedish%20server.htm

i also tried to run mtr while im connected to castor and it resolved in the same amount of packet loss

i guess this means that i can narrow down the problem to my router/firewall

here you can see that pfsense detects packet itself and therefore i dont think the firewall has anything to do with it

something that im unsure about is if i have configured the vpn client inside pf sense correctly

please take a look at this page a tell me if i have configured it wrong in some way

Hello!

The configuration screenshot looks perfectly ok. You can perform a test, a connection to a TCP port instead of an UDP one, just to check whether it can mitigate the packet loss problem.

Finally, another test that you might perform is to connect directly with the OpenVPN client from you computer, letting the router alone (you might test with pfsense enabled and disabled).

ok now i i've tested nearly everything there is to test and one thing i tried seems to have eliminated the packet loss completely as long as i don't put a lot of load on the vpn connection at the same time

i achieved this simply by changing from port 443 to 80 before connecting to castor

note that when i said i only changed the port i meant it, i didn't change the protocol from udp or any other setting

MTR

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/30440768/Annat/direkt%20castor%20port%2080%20portlane%207434%20packets%200%25%20loss.htm

if i put 9 megabytes/second load on the vpn server i get 1 packet loss per 1000 packets.

but i guess i can count with that when i put so much strain on it?

if connect to port 80 on draconis it doesn't eliminate the packet loss i still receive about 1% packet loss.

i have also tried all the other things you asked me to try like connecting to your vpn through a vpn client installed on my desktop pc instead of connecting with pfsense

i tried it both with the pfsense box between my isp and without it

sadly i always get 1% packet loss as before

so bottom line i've managed to resolve the issue by connecting through port 80 when im connected to castor but the problem still remains on draconis

any idea why changing to port 80 helps on castor but not on draconis?

please check and see if you get the same result as me

ps you spelled uppsala wrong on the service status page

its spelled uppsala not Upssala

Hello!

Thank you for all the tests, they are very interesting. If you have time, check with a TCP connection if you still have packet loss, both on Castor and Draconis.

0.1% and 1% packet loss on UDP OpenVPN tunneling may be acceptable: OpenVPN may resend packets even in UDP, so you will suffer really a minimal performance loss (probably you won't even notice the difference with respect to a 0% packet loss). Unfortunately, at the moment we have no plausible explanation about why you detect packet loss on 443 UDP but not on 80 UDP with Castor.

And yes, we detect rarely packet loss when there's high latency from OpenVPN clients in Italy to any VPN server on UDP ports, between 0.05% and 0.1%. It is not our servers fault (exception: a couple of months ago we had a dramatic packet loss on Delphini, but that was just because a network card was broken), however we'll perform further tests with Draconis.

Thank you for the correction about Uppsala.

Kind regards

ok i will give tcp a try in the weekend and see what kind of results i get of that

another thing have noted is that my connection to castor has been up 7 days without getting disconnected a single time since i switched to port 80

before i got disconnected several times each day

thanks for helping me

it means a lot to have a vpn provider that cares about its customers

conclusion after all my testing it seems like you're having a problem on all your service for traffic entering through port 443 with the UDP protocol

i hope u can correct this with help of all the information i have provided

Hello!

Thank you very much for your accurate testing.

As you can see, your results seem to show that the packet loss happen outside "our" network. Such minimal packet loss toward portlane is probably normal with UDP, anyway it is not possible to rule out that some piece of infrastructure between portlane (or in portlane) and the various datacenters where our servers are located, or between you and "our" datacenters, does not work optimally. It seems unlikely that the datacenters where we have servers have ALL the same problem.

Kind regards
