AirVPN and Minecraft log in

Recommended Posts

Hello there.

I discovered the following issue:

Since roughly a week I can't log in to my Mojang account from the Minecraft launcher or Minecraft.net / Mojang.com.

I always got the error "Invalid credentials", they were correct though. After some time I figured out that the problem was my VPN-connection.

I'm always using AirVPN's Dutch servers. So I did every time when logging in to Minecraft previously and it worked, until last week.

Further I found out that I can't log in from Swiss servers and that I can log in from German or Swedish servers. So I found a workaround.

I contacted the support, but they couldn't help me. So I want to ask here how that can be? I'm really curious, what the problem might be.

I hope I can find an answer here.

Thanks in advance

Can confirm... Able to log in from some AirVPN servers, but not others.

Still waiting on reply from Mojang though.

Thanks for joining the thread

Now I know, that I'm not alone and that this is really an issue.

By the way:

I don't think you'll get any help from Mojang.

It's not that they couldn't help me, they didn't want to help me.

They said they aren't responsable and I just shouldn't use a VPN.

Yeah they told me the same thing, more or less.

"We don't recommend using VPN, and we can't help you any further".

So I assume they are just quietly banning VPN IPs? Odd.

Can any of AirVPN staff speculate on what else could be the issue?

I cant log in from Germany anymore, Sweden still works.

I also tested Great Britain and it works.

I found some information on reddit.

I can say now that it's definitely Mojang banning VPNs, however I don't understand why they do this.

Griefing is kind of a problem in Minecraft Realms, I imagine. Here VPNs help the griefers: If a server bans your real IP, you can't connect to it anymore unless you reboot your router or initiate a reconnection. A VPN can be changed along with the IP more easily. Now, if you ban griefers' IPs from even logging in, you hope to prevent it because an account which is not logged in to a Mojang account can't use Realms.

I'm not sure if they are completely against VPNs or simply banning IPs of hackers/griefers. Maybe they also block VPN users from China because of the country laws, I don't know.

My experience: I use VPN simply for the security & privacy. Now when a VPN server is blocked by the minecraft login servers, my login gets rejected and it looks like the login details were wrong but they aren't. Some AirVPN servers do work. We could list the working servers here but I don't know if it is a good idea because of potential abuse. What do you think? Anyway, you should be able to find a working server with no more than 3 attempts at the moment.
