SSL information for a newbie

Hi there,

 

I wanted to know if using airVPN without SSL protocol, can my isp see the traffic?

 

Am i correct in assuming that without SSL the isp can identify it as being VPN traffic but not see the contents? and using the SSL the ISP cannot identify what type of traffic is at all?

 

If someone could explain this or link some information explaining it that would be grand.

Hello!

 

The VPN hides your traffic. SSL *can* hide the fact that a VPN is being used, by encapsulating the VPN traffic inside SSL, which makes it blend in with regular SSL traffic that a lot of websites now use for security (HTTPS) - but there's other ways of identifying VPN traffic. There's some websites out there which test this specifically. We had a huge thread about it at one point. Either way is fine, as your ISP won't see what you're doing. But SSL/SSH does come with a performance cost .

Where is the performance hit felt using SSL? Is it on the clients hardware or through the network throughput?

It's a processor thing, primarily. The math involved in multiple levels of encryption.
