So i've heard the new bill proposed may get pirates to do 10-Year downtime. How true is it? And what exactly counts as piracy under these laws? What about torrenting itself?

I never heard of anyone getting sued for sharing a Linux ISO via BitTorrent. But I do hear of people getting sued for sharing copyrighted content via BitTorrent.

Well, I have news for you. I have gotten copywrong strike letters sent to my ISP when the only thing I torrented was Linux distros. The problem is that the media trolls do not seem to bother to look what you are doing. They think of torrents themselves as the problem, and want everything back to the mid 90s level of bullshit where FTP servers were the place to get anything legitimate.

 

DMCA does not at current impose a penalty for false claims. And the media trolls are capitalizing on this heavily.

The problem is that the media trolls do not seem to bother to look what you are doing.

 

I must admit, this is partly true.

But I also must point out, these people are lawyers mostly. Most lawyers are laymans when it comes to IT so it's very likely they don't understand the technology, ergo, the technology is cancer, ergo, we'll sue the world for using it. The worst part is, if you start arguing with them they drag you to their homeland, the laws, where you will most likely fight your last battle for some time.
