help for noob

hi there just looking to get some advice for a noobie to VPN, i recently moved to a new location and while i got faster internet (100MB/s) for less then my old provider it seems they restrict your account for torrenting, and i am looking for a way to get at least almost all of my connection over a vpn.

 

so far i have tried many things on here and other forums to help me get those speeds.  i can currently only get about 40-50 mb/s most of the time less though.

 

was just wondering if anyone could help me out a little.  i would like to use the openVPN GUI client instead of the AirVPN client unless someone can make an argument that i shouldnt.

​Have you read my guide? It'll help you a lot if you're new. I recommend that you try the AirVPN client first, because it's really quite excellent and I think it goes above and beyond most other VPN clients. Just download the latest Stable version. In my guide, I give you some tips on increasing your speed and what you should do. The VPN will hide your torrenting and AirVPN fully accepts torrenting; just make sure you've got no leaks and that you've applied the various tweaks . Of course if my guide doesn't answer all your questions, then feel free to ask me. By the way, I don't know which OS you're on or what you've already tried.

and again, why do you want to use the openvpn GUI?  How can we argue in favor of Eddie if we don't know your concerns?

i have gone through and dont everything in your guide that could help me, i changed my buffers to 512 and 512 but higher then 256 should be better gith?

 

also i use ClearOS as a router in my personal network if that may change anything.  i see lots of other people getting 100-150Mb/s so i feel like i should at least come slose to that range.  anythign else that you can think of that may help me.

512 isn't recommended. Most should go for 256kb. If you have any firewall or 3rd party networking software, then that could impact your connection. As well as whether you use a Wired or Wireless connection, how good your router is, how your ISP is and so forth. There's many parameters to adjust. Selecting the right server, isn't always about picking the one closest to you for instance, as some ISPs might have direct routes to other ISPs and/or countries. Just ask giganerd, he'll tell you haha.

interesting.  I had tried high buffers way back when I used an asus router for openvpn and it wouldn't accept higher than 512.  but, 2MB is accepted on my pfsense box.   testing now.

Oh I didn't mean to say it's a bad choice, only that I've only ever seen Staff recommend 256kb.

There is no "universal" number and there is no "good" and "bad" value.

This highly depends on what your usage is, what is your latency expectation and what kind of

traffic is most important for you. The speed increase comes at the price of practical latency -

when the buffer is not yet full it will not be sent - so if you have applications which exchange

small number of packets on idle connections - high buffers can be negative for you.
