Eddie 2.11beta available

Recommended Posts

Staff may I suggest that you use the name "Eddie" in the actual client a bit more? It seems it's very easy for people to miss it and perhaps it would add to the name recognition a little more.

Some appropriate places could be: About page, at the top right corner next to the version number, it could say "Eddie Client Version 2.11.9" instead of just the number & at the top of the client, it could say "AirVPN Eddie Client" Maybe it would also be appropriate to put an entry into the "Stats" section, saying "AirVPN Client Software Name: Eddie" & "Client Version: 2.11.9", as the Stats section already contains other information, such as install paths. This wouldn't make the "About" page obsolete either, as it would still contain links to the various AirVPN software and such :). Maybe even a line at the login screen which says "Welcome to the AirVPN Eddie Client" ?

Haha. Just my thoughts anyway :D.

There is an hybrid situation about that. For example under macOS it's now simply called "Eddie" and no more "AirVPN", at least as application name.

The long-term direction is to improve the support of other VPN providers (expecially in Eddie 3.*), and in general remove any AirVPN reference (except in the About of course).

Oh thanks Clodo. Wow, that's unexpected. Don't you think people will just be confused they downloaded Eddie and not AirVPN then? Also, is your intention to make a substitute OpenVPN client, where other VPN providers can plug in their stuff too? That's how I interpreted it. That would be pretty amazing if it's the case, as the Eddie client is so lovely. Thank you for answering my first question .

Moderators do not speak on behalf of AirVPN. Only the Official Staff account does. Please also do not run Tor Exit Servers behind AirVPN, thank you.

Just curious, are there plans to have 'minimize to tray' functionality (for linux specifically)?

Yes, but only in Eddie 3 (with GTK#-based UI).

Oh thanks Clodo. Wow, that's unexpected. Don't you think people will just be confused they downloaded Eddie and not AirVPN then?

Of course. For this reason we don't simply replace "AirVPN Client" with "Eddie". And there are a lot of string "Eddie - AirVPN client" around.

Also, is your intention to make a substitute OpenVPN client, where other VPN providers can plug in their stuff too? That's how I interpreted it.

Exactly. There are a lot of UI wrapper of OpenVPN: Tunnelblick, Viscosity etc. With different kind of restriction about features, OS platform, free or not, source-code auditable etc.

Eddie can be a great alternative of this kind of software, and it's released under GPL3 and free for all.

Here at AirVPN we are mainly hacktivist, develop tools for Net Neutrality it's our main mission. I still think Eddie can be a great software for all people that need it, and i don't find a reason to restrict it to AirVPN service.

The fact that actually it's user-friendly only with AirVPN servers it's only a limit due to our priority around AirVPN customers issues/feedback.

For this kind of reason, we plan (long-term) to distinguish Eddie (software) vs the AirVPN service.

Note: Eddie 2.11.* can ALREADY works with ANY openvpn configuration files, also of course with servers of our VPN competitors. Note for example this topic.

Not user-friendly, ok. Documentation about this is lacking, ok. But the objective it's clear. Eddie 3.* will have a better UI interface about that.

I keep getting this error when I try to login. "Cannot login. (The request timed out)". I have wiped my SSD and reinstalled macOS Sierra 10.12.2 (16C68), But even with a fresh install I get the same error. I have another Mac on my wireless network and Eddie works on it with no problems, I can not seam to fix this issue. I'm using Eddie 2.11.10

I thought it was fixed, but not: when I exit Eddie the process is still running in gnu/linux and I must kill it manually.

There is a well known issue in Mono 4 which causes Eddie to crash when a Windows key is pressed while the application is focused (I've included the stacktrace below). You can find out more about it here https://bugzilla.xamarin.com/show_bug.cgi?id=40069 and here https://sourceforge.net/p/keepass/bugs/1545/#1618 as mentioned in the open issue on github https://github.com/AirVPN/airvpn-client/issues/42.

The workaround seems to be to run the executable with --verify-all flag, which prevents the crash from happening. I was wondering if it was possible to add this flag to the airvpn launcher/wrapper to both portable and non-portable builds of Eddie experimental?

@tomr

Unfortunately the issue does not occur in our testing machines.
We have planned to check & close all github open issued when we release the 2.11 final.
/usr/bin/airvpn
contains

#!/bin/bash
mono /usr/lib/AirVPN/AirVPN.exe --path=$HOME/.airvpn "$@"

Please try
mono /usr/lib/AirVPN/AirVPN.exe --verify-all --path=$HOME/.airvpn "$@"
or
mono --verify-all /usr/lib/AirVPN/AirVPN.exe --path=$HOME/.airvpn "$@"
(this may throw Invalid PE Header...)

thanks.

Kind regards

The newest beta client fixed the Mac OSX 10.12.3 issues I was having in the past with it hanging forever.  It now connects in less than 3 seconds.  I'm very impressed with the current beta client.

@staff

I can confirm that running the executable with the --verify-all flag fixes the issue on my end. It turns out that this issue also applies to the current stable version of Eddie if run with Mono 4+.

Unfortunately, I'm unable to update the launcher of the portable release as it is binary - would it be possible to add it as a default to both portable and non-portable versions of 2.11?

I am still having the very long connect times.  Latest Eddie under latest MacOS Sierra.  Any suggestions?  All settings are default.
