Hello AirVPN, Goodbye NordVPN :D

I've tried a few VPN  Providers lately, one of them is NordVPN. I can't say anything bad about this Provider. It's attached to a tomato Router (Netgear Nighthawk) and works fine  (Tested yesterday: 32 Mbps on my CellPhone). With the Client on Windows i've got ~120 Mbps last time i tested it (even gaming was working fine for me). So it's about the same Speed i got with Hadar (Linux / Eddie) today.

 

At the moment I'm using both (AirVPN and NordVPN) because NordVPN had a 2year offer, which was a really good deal. I personally like both Provider....imho: Air has the advantage of Eddie for Linux....which is really helpful. NordVPN covers more countries.

 

Of course sometimes Server are slower than other, but this happens to Air also....for example all HK Servers except Hadar aren't useabe for me at the moment. So, if there are other working Server, everything is fine for me .

First time using a VPN. After much internal reflection, ended up going with AirVPN Found a discount code to boot XD made it all the more worthwhile IMO and sub for a year.

I'm into my second day with AirVpn and have tried Eddie and I'm happily getting speeds like this:-

I'm on Virginmedia 100Mb/6Mb

I've also tried setting up my Asus RT-AC66U_B1 router (Merlin FW) which has been a doddle compared to other providers but I'm not getting anymore more than 30Mb tops and its been as low as 6Mb,

I understand that the RT-AC66U_B1 hasn't the processing "grunt" of more expensive routers but surely I could achieve faster speeds than that? any help/ suggestions out there (if you say buy a more expensive router it will go to help swaying the wife lol)

Anyway I can feel the urge to go the whole hog n subscribe to Air for a while longer especially if I can get the speeds sorted on the router side

Is there anyway of "winding it up/ overclocking without burning the house down?  

Just a bit confused now because it states there are two "Processors" in the log (in red)....... is that a real one and a Asus dodgy one?

ahh...I had in mind an older version of the AC66.  You've got one with a dual core ARM CPU, at 1000mhz.  Yes, you should be able to get about 40mbit/s with that I'd imagine.  Just experiment with it.  There are plenty of ideas in all sorts of threads on this forum.  Besides changing port and protocol you should be able to do many extra things by adding the option in the custom config area.  To change port and protocol just change that setting only, and click save.  No need to upload a new config each time. When you're testing a download make sure both core are being used.  In Merlin it should put openvpn on a different core from kernel work if you use openvpn client 1.

Thanks for that, I'll start looking around the site for more ideas on what/ how to try and improve things.

I might even take the router back (less then 3 week old) and add another £100 or so to the refund and get something else...

Sorry to necro an old post but, add another one to the list here! A week or so ago, I bought a month of FrootVPN, but no port forwarding, and they just do not seem to have much in the way of anything more than 'heres a server, connect to it' available.. Tried Nord's free three day trial, while I started researching different VPNs.. Nord was nice, didn't have to port forward, if I was on the right server. Trial ran out, and was this close to giving them a whole year's worth. Noticed AirVPN had 3 days for $1 so what the heck. Setup was a bit more complex than Nord (I didn't use Nord's client because I already had Tunnelblick installed on my Mac for Froot), but holy crap. First thing I did was a speed test, and AirVPN maxed out my 100Mbps connection, and the end result was an average of 90 down and 12 up! I was hitting like 4 max with Nord! The client even lets me route IPs outside the tunnel, so now I can connect to my router once again without disconnecting! I was only on Nord for 3 days so I didn't run into any issues that needed to deal with customer service so I can't comment on that, but just the speed and configurability of Air has blown me away. My three days is up tomorrow afternoon and that was enough for me, just signed up for a year. Just from digging around, it looks like if I do ever need help, this place has a great community to go to, unlike Nord where its just their CS you deal with. Im an IT guy, I prefer it that way instead of a CS rep trained to read a script. It was a little pricier (I had a coupon that brought a year of Nord down to $48) but that extra $20 I just spent for actually giving me my full bandwidth is definitely worth it.

Use the network lock.  There's a setting to allow local network access even with network lock on.  You shouldn't have to add routes to get to your router.

I tried it just now, doesn't work. I removed the route from the prefs, shut down Eddie, restarted and connected, still can't connect to it whether Im on the VPN or network locked. It might be because while the lan is 192.168.0.x, the router lives at 192.168.100.1??
