Possibly time to move away from pfSense, what do you use in conjunction with AirVPN?

Recommended Posts

I have been using pfSense successfully with AirVPN for about a year now. Unfortunately despite my best efforts, port forwarding fails. I can get SOME ports to show green lights on AirVPN's client port /test page, though not all. And the ones that do report green, can still not be reached from others - such as my ARK server or my TeamSpeak server.

While I would like to solve the mystery, there are notes here and there mentioning pfSense not being very port forward friendly.

I am considering looking at some other prosumer type firewalls such as those found here :

The two that stick out are the popular Untangle and pfSense's fork OPNsense.

Any comments from users of those two (or the others listed on that page), while also using AirVPN [via OpenVPN]?

Thanks

Old Setup:

pfSense 2.1.5 on :

Dell PowerEdge R860

2x Xeon E5620 @2.6ghz
16GB DDR3 EEC

Old ISP :

BT Infinity Clearnet - 79.5mbps BRAS ; 74.3mbps DS  / 20.0mbps US
AirVPN -------------- - --------------------  ; 69.0mpbs DS /  19.50mbps US

Whatever your issue is, this is not pfSense. So moving to another fork of it,

like OPNsense will not resolve your problem.

You can try configuring port forwarding like it is described in the pfSense how-to

thread, many users got it working without any issues.

Upgrade from 2.1.5 might help too. Port forwarding in pfsense is fine, it's likely user error somewhere.

Untangle is easier to configure but less powerful and some options cost.

OPNsense isn't ready for prime time IMHO quite yet.

What makes your opinion of OPNsense not ready for prime time?
