It depends on what model you use of course. But normal routers are just slower in processing then laptops or desktops. Your router needs to have some horsepower in it. Just check around for your model and experiences of others

 

I've got about  40 to 50% of my initial speeds (+/- 100Mb) on my AC87-U.

Indeed it sounds like a lack of fire power on the router side. Keep in mind that openvpn is encryption/decryption of packets in real time. I had the same problem with my Buffalo WZR-600DHP. I got only 60% of my normal speeds. The problem was fixed when i build my own Linux server and im using it as router. Now i get 100% of my speeds. Upload and download.
