ANSWERED Poor p2p performance, Cisco EPC3825 gateway issue?

tl;dr torrent download and upload speeds max at ~1.1 MBps. Without VPN I get near max 230 Mbps down. Non torrent traffic eg. speedtest gives decent speeds 50-100 Mbps. Friend is using same server, same torrent, same torrent client, same settings, same OS. He has fiber connection, i have cable.

 

Speedtest gives reliably decent speeds. Nowhere close to my max 230 Mbps down but enough. Torrent traffic however crumbles down to ~ 1.1MBps up and down, but it works fine for my friend. My friend is using the same swedish Serpentis server gets near his max 50 Mbps speed with torrents.

So Ive tested a few swedish and other Europian servers. Havent had any success there. The only difference between my friend's and mine hw/sw is that he is connect to the internet via fiber and im using cisco cable modem. I have also tested different protocols, UDP 443 gives best results, SSL, SSH and TCP bring speeds down by ~50%. I have forwarded a port for my torrent client to use. Reports green on test.

 

 

So my questions are following:

 

Are cable modems or specifically Cisco EPC3825 EuroDocsis 3.0 Data Gateway not good for this kind of traffic via VPN?

Are there any special gateway/router/modem settings I should look into to fix this issue?

What can I do to fix this?

 

My specs.

250/20 Mbps cable connection

Cable modem/gateway Cisco EPC3825 EuroDocsis 3.0 Data Gateway

utorrent/deluge/qbittorrent all tested no difference

CPU: i5-4670k

Windows 7 x64

I dont know what other specs to give.

Hello!

 

This solution was given to me by the staff and has worked for myself and couple other AirVPN users. Try to set the buffers in the AirVPN client from 128  to 256 kB (in "AirVPN" -> "Preferences" -> "Advanced" -> "General"). Click "Save" and start a new VPN connection.

 

Then do a speedtest and see if that helped!

Thanks. 256 helped a little and 512 even more. from 40 to ~70 to 100 Mbps on serpentis. Ill test torrents and get back to you.

No change in torrent performance. Still very poor.

Well, I'm glad it helped in at least one way. Regarding the torrent speed, have you tried to forward a port with AirVPN? That has worked for other AIrVPN users as well.

 

Go into your "Client Aree" and on the right should be a "Forwarded Ports" tab. Click the "Add" button with a green plus next to it and copy that port number. Put that number into your torrent client. Then run the option to test it. The little circle should be green if it is working. Let me know if that works!

 

Also, I would highly suggest disabling the option in your torrent client "UPnP/NAT-PMP" feature. It is a hindrance to privacy.

Yes I have forward a port for my torrent client and tested it. Shows green light but didnt make any change in download speed. It probably affected upload speeds but I dont monitor those that intensely

Turned off the UPnP/NAT-PMP feature. No effect in speed tho.

Does your whole connection get slower when torrenting?

 

You could try downgrading your TAP-adapter drivers.

Yes it does. With torrents at 600 KBps down / 40 KBps up my speedtest results crash down to less than 5 Mbps / 2 Mbps.

 

I downgraded TAP drivers to 9.0.0.9 but it didnt make any difference.

I had a Cisco EPC3825 once. It had to be restarted regularly in order to utilize the correct speed. It had some kind of connection-buffer that got filled up and could only be cleared by a reboot.

​Do you run it in router- or bridge-mode? Try bridge-mode. My general network performance was much better in bridge-mode.

​You say you tested different network protocols. UDP should normally be the preferred protocol, but did you also test the different ports? Always assume your ISP prioritize traffic - even though they claim otherwise.
