Nice new router project

Recommended Posts

The CZ.NIC guys are good, they brought us BIRD routing daemon and KNOT DNS.

This is a very promising project, 1.6Ghz ARMv7 CPU is something never existed yet

on general consumer router, as well as 1GB ram.

If released, the expected OpenVPN performance on it should be fine with upto 100Mbit speeds.

For anyone who plans to upgrade their routers and run OpenVPN on them - consider this one.

Hate the trackers on the ondiegogo site. And sadly for me it was only a white page... .

Just remember crowdfunding is not the same as a pre-order, there is a very real risk that you will never receive a product or even if you do and it's somehow turns out not to be a smoldering pile of dung it's entirely possible that with no continued source of revenue that the team behind may just dump the project and move on.

I'm not hating on the specific project just saying that this has happened.. *a lot*

This indeed will support AirVPN with upto 100Mbit speeds.

And the project is going to launch 99.9% - this is not some random project of

making a new coffee machine with TCP/IP, these guys are as solid as rock.

I was lucky to see some of the founders during the CCC conference - and I can only

say the most pleasent wishes. If you are into open source software and hardware,

and a fan of OpenWRT, you should definitely watch this:

As for pfSense, you cannot get a board with this form factor and 802.11ac with

this price. And trust me I turned the internet up side down to find one.

This is why I am going to keep a Xeon based pfSense M-ITX as a packet router, and when

this box is going to be ready, will serve as a very powerful access point for 802.11b/g/n/ac

with 50+ clients with multiple routing purposes and perimiter tasks.

There are not many projects I personally can say I am awaiting, but this is one of them.

The main advantage this sort of router would have over pfSense on any old system is very low power usage and no noise. Other than that, you can build a Raspberry Pi to do what you want if you have the patience to get everything configured as you like.

*Edit* I should point out the router is much more potent than you may think. It is a dual core 1.6 Ghz CPU. Not a single core.

Debugging is at least twice as hard as writing the program in the first place.

So if you write your code as clever as you can possibly make it, then by definition you are not smart enough to debug it.

I took a "chance" with this.

I have never "bought" anything via kickstarter.

I hope they dont just run with the money....

Since they are a not-for-profit group, I really doubt they will take your money and run. You will get what you pay for. If I had the cash I would be buying one too. But I will have to wait a while. (My sad little WRT54GL will keep on running at the slow crawl it can manage...)

Never joined anything at any crowdfunding site.

How does it work? I don't see any info anywhere on when they plan on start shipping these badboys out

oops. The answer was obvious.

I will have the opportunity to speak to CZ.NIC on CeBIT in Hanover about their Turris Omnia this week.

I could bring all the info directly from them to this thread, if desired. If you have any questions for them, ask away, I will relay them.
