i use airvpn because here in south korea port forwarding is impossible (at least with the ISP i am on) and many websites are censored (not just porn sites, but yes, i like being able to access anything anytime i want, without having to worry about censorship). anyway, i always look for a low ping before connecting to a server (currently 'tegmen' in toronto, canada). when i first connect, speeds are usually okay (although today they are kinda crap for some reason) but after being connected for a while it gets so bad that facebook takes 30+ seconds to load, soulseek all but grinds to a halt, and torrents also slow down to about 10% of the speeds they would normally be at upon a fresh connect. strangely enough, closer servers like hong kong or singapore are much slower than servers in canada.

i don't know much about how vpn's or networks work in these situations, but i am sure the speeds i am experiencing are slow, even by vpn standards. i realize i won't get the same speeds as i would if i was browing without a vpn in south korea (it is extremely well-wired here) but surely there's something wrong with my configuration? no idea, hope someone can help. thanks.

It is possible your ISP is throttling your OpenVPN connection (the protocol needed to connect to an AirVPN server). Firstly, you should attempt connecting via SSL, which will "mask" your traffic and appear that you are visiting HTTPS sites (commonly used by major search engines, banks, etc.) and they will be unable to block it. If for any reason SSL doesn't work, you can try SSH, on different ports and see if that will work. SSH, is also known as "Putty", is what is used to connect to servers (although AirVPN uses it to connect to it's servers). Both, also provide an extra layer of encryption to and from the server.

Yes. Try connecting with SSL Port 443, if it does not work, is slow or any other issue, then try connecting with SSH, try all the different ports including the alternative IP.

hi agian,

been trying to give this a few days before i reply too hastily.. however speeds (even with ssl, which seems to have improved things somewhat) are still rollercoastering in a huge way.. ports are all forwarded etc., but speeds jump up and down like crazy from 0.0001 kb/s up to 1.5 mb/s and upwards, then back down and up down and up..

plus after a couple hours of being connected to any server, there is quite a significant lag in loading websites.

also, i can't seem to find any pings below 100ms? is this normal?

any other suggestions would be most welcome.

going to try ssh mode. what is the difference with ssl and ssh? also, is there any way to configure the proxy through macintosh system preferences, instead of using the application? or would that make no difference.

am new to vpn's so don't really know how they work or how to tinker with settings at all.

ssh seems to not make much difference to ssl? again, no clue what the difference is, but both seem /marginally/ better than udp or tcp ports.

on ssh with alternative entry port, and same thing--specifically torrents--jumping from 20 kb/s up to 2 mb/s, but it's not staying at any consistent speed at all, and overall feels sluggish (definite lag with websites as well, some things like gmail will only load the text in some cases, until the connection "speeds up" and i hit reload)

sorry to keep harping on my own post, but on the 'status' page of airvpn, i am getting all pings in the 1000s now--i'm not sure what this all really means, but for me, the end result is still really sluggish performance. just thought i'd mention that too.

is there any way to configure a vpn through mac system preferences? or would that make no difference than using the application? surely something on my end must be misconfigured?
