MS OneNote does not sync vith AirVPN

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I have found out that MS OneNote - on my PC, iPhone and IPad - does not sync with Skydrive when I use AirVPN anymore :-(. It seems to me that port necessary for this is closed and I do not know which port I should open. Does anybody has more information?

Thanks to anyone who can help!

Which servers did you use? Try a sync with another server.

I am afraid there is no settings for a servers :-( - or do you know where to set it?

Do you use the Air client or another VPN client?

I am using my ASUS DD-WRT router with OpenVPN client inside. But I am ready to try AirVPN client at my PC if it helps me to investigate how to continue...

Hello,

in this case you have to remember to properly forward packets to the appropriate device behind the router through a DNAT (for every and each port you wish to forward), because the devices connected to the router are behind the router NAT itself. Please see this guide https://airvpn.org/topic/9270-how-to-forward-ports-in-dd-wrt-tomato-with-iptables

Kind regards

Hello,

Yes I know, I have done it already for another device with P2P for Transmission client. But in that case, I was able to choose corresponing port based on settings in Transmission client and this port number was available here - but it this OneNote case, I do not know exactly port number and - moreover - I cannot define this ports by myself.

Now, I made other investigations and to my surprise I cannot connect to https://skydrive.live.com even from my browser. All the other https are working :-( WHen I switch DNS from 10.4.0.1. to 8.8.8.8. it starts working and even OneNote client is working correctly. Switching back to 10.4.0.1. and the same problem as before. :-(

So I apologize - problem seems to be not in the closed ports and their forwarding but in DNS 10.4.0.1. I set in my router. :-( But I would like to use this recommended AirVPN's DNS - so I expect that there is a solution of this problem na provider side... :-D

Hello,

is the listening port reported on MS One Note manual? If not, launch the program and issue the command "netstat -a -b" from a command prompt to see it, or use TCPView by Mark Russinovich http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897437.aspx

Hello.

no, none port is reported.

But as I wrote above, after a change of DNS server at my DD-WRT rourer (instead 10.4.:0.1.  I use 8.8.8.8.) work OneNote sync everywhere - on PC and on Ipad.

I tried mentioned command "netstat -a -b" (with above mentioned DNS 8.8.8.8) and I got

Hello,

yes, the ports are reported, as you can see. Apparently you have no need to remotely forward ports: it's onenote.exe that established the connections, it does not listen for incoming connections (and it's quite logical). We're glad to know that the problem is solved.

Yes, you are right.

But it seems to me that the problem itself is not solved yet - I cannot use you recommended DNS and have to use Google´s one (which I would of course prefer)...

Hello,

while the router is connected to the VPN, can you ping 10.4.0.1 from a computer connected to the router? And from the router itself?

Hello,

yes, it works.

With DNS 10.4.0.1. - when I tried -  works nearly everything exept  address https://skydrive.live.com (even from my browser). I am afraid it seems to be the address I need to sync MS One Note...

Hello,

skydrive.live.com is correctly resolved by our DNS and the web site is accessible from the VPN servers we have tested (NL and IT). Therefore the problem should be something else.

Hello,

So do you have any recommendation what to check? At the moment, change of DNS server in Static DNS 1 field at Setup page influences mentioned functionality...

Hello!

What happens if you set as static DNS 2 a public DNS? What is the output of the command (from the router and while the router is connected to the VPN):

dig @10.4.0.1 skydrive.live.com

Hello,

I am afraid I am not capable to run this dig command :-( - I tried it from a web "command" section and I got  "/bin/sh: eval: line 1: dig: not found", when I used ssh client I got "not found" :-(

As a static DNS2 I used OpenNIC DNS server  50.116.23.211.
