Slow connection to AIRvpn

I am downloading a torrent using Transmission 2.51 on Ubuntu 12.04. Transmission reports I am downloaded from 8 of 36 connected peers. Speed varies from 3 to 40 kB/s. This seems extremely slow. Am I missing something?

This is the bit of /var/log/syslog detailing the connection made by openvpn to AIRvpn (I think). Thanks for any help.
